Myself Introduced

Pualani

I am of Hawaiian/mixed ancestry as is typical of most of us who are native Hawaiians of today. My Hawaiian ancestry that can be traced back to the ancient lines of Liloa comes down from my mother's side of the family.

A little about myself--I was born in St. Louis, MO (the youngest of three girls) the year my father graduated from seminary and at the age of 6 mos., my family returned to Hawai'i. We lived on Kauai until I was about 3 yrs. old and then moved to Oahu where I was raised until I was almost 16 yrs. old. At that time my parents and I moved to Falls Church, VA where I finished my schooling, married, and settled.

During my years in VA, I performed Polynesian dance professionally for approximately 16 yrs. off and on, until I retired for my third and final time. During that time I involved myself in Little Theatre, music, writing, and art, as well as costume design for, and teaching and choreographing of Polynesian dance. I even had a job at a "Polynesian" restaurant in Washington, D.C. as a singer and dancer for the better part of a year.

As in all Hawaiian families, there are many rich stories to tell of my forebear's. I will be taking you through some of the history of our people through research that I have done and via links to other sites on the web.

As you have noticed, I dabble in many things including art and the following drawings are of my making...hope you enjoy them and others that I will pepper my site with.

But enough of me; and let us now get on to more interesting things at hand. Sit back and enjoy your journey through my site of Hawai'i Nei.

Aloha Marchto Washington, D.C., Saturday, August 8, 1998

"This is called the Aloha March because if we aspire to save our people, our 'aina (land), and our way of life, thenwhatever we do, we must do it with "aloha". Even though our aloha was and continues to be taken advantage of andexploited, to be "Hawaiian" is to "live with aloha." We go to Washington D.C. with truth, aloha and spirituality. We striveto carry ourselves with a gentle dignity and pride which Queen Lili'uokalani would have been proud to see following inher footsteps. We honor our first hosts, the First Nations of Moku Honu, the Great Turtle Island (the North Americancontinent), both on the journey and in Washington, D.C. We encourage those who cannot go to D.C. to plan an event ontheir island to run in conjunction with the Aloha March, to highlight the same issues and to promote lokahi (unity) andsolidarity among our people and those who support our cause for justice and a healthy Hawai'i Nei."

CULTURE
A couple of examples of what is to be found on this page are shown below:

History

Jack Vorfeld

This is a personal website; however, I think that you may find it very interesting as a slice of what it was like growing up in the islands in the early 20th century, getting a flavor of that p eriod in time through to more recent days. It also gives a flavor of the sugar industry of yesteryear that is now virtually a dead industry in the islands. It also gives the history of a family of the islands.

Kauluwehi

Have you ever wondered as to the spirit of the Hawaiian people? Have you ever asked what "Aloha Spirit" meant? Have you ever wondered what makes an entire race of people cease to exist? This site will give you a great deal of insight into a people that are periously near their extinction unless we all work very hard at saving what is left after more than a c entur y of suppression, as well as a wonderful sampling of the culture of the people of this mystical island nation.

Hula
Legends
Music

A Subsidiary of Hawaii Calls. Hula Records

This is a site steeped in the history of Hawa iian music that had been presented to the public over the air waves.
"Once you see what we offer in terms of Hawaiian music, you won't need any other supplier. We do it all. All labels. All sizes. We can get anything you want in the way of Hawaiian music.
As an added attraction we have something called Aloha Service. Aloha Service will attempt to answer, to the best of our ability, any questions you may have about Hawaii. You may have some questions about Hawaii that you think are unimportant."

Health
Language

The Hawaiian Language Website

"An interminable language...it is one of the oldest living languages of the earth as some conjecture, and may well be classed among the best...the thought to displace it, or to doom it to oblivion by substituting the English language, ought not for a moment to be indulged. Long live the grand old, sonorous, poetical Hawaiian language." ~The Rev. Lorenzo Lyons (Makua Laiana), 1878

HAWAIIAN GOVERNMENT ISSUES
This section not only informs as to items like quarantine and pets in the islands, but also opens the window on the topic of Sovereignty that most outside of the islands are not knowledgeable about.

From the cliffs of Kaua'i, to the mountains of Mauna Loa, to the submerged Island of Loihi, Hawaiian Islands are truly unique in the world.
