The Alae beds pictured below are how salt was harvested and still is by
just a few people in the islands. When living on Kauai as a very young
child, one of the parishioners of my father's church let us have an Alae bed
to harvest our own salt. I can still remember the sounds and scents of the
beds and the joy of working them with my family...a part of our people's
history and culture.
I hope you enjoy your tour.

Jack Vorfeld This is a
personal website; however, I think that you may find it very interesting as
a slice of what it was like growing up in the islands in the early 20th
century, getting a flavor of that period in time through to more recent
days. It also gives a flavor of the sugar industry of yesteryear that is
now virtually a dead industry in the islands. It also gives the history of
a family of the islands.

special person who has done so much more for his people. Go to his site to
learn more about him and his contributions to music, hula, and the culture of
the islands. To learn more of his cultural contribution, go to The Hawaiian Language Website.

old, sonorous, poetical Hawaiian language." ~The Rev. Lorenzo Lyons (Makua
Laiana), 1878
