Chris Kenney, the Principal Art Conservator, at MÖBIUS: Art Conservation
is currently working with the Monterey Museum of Art in the conservation of
16 paintings and frames recently gifted to the Museum. These include 19th and
early 20th century paintings by such notable artists as Armin Hansen,
Grace Hudson, William Keith, Bertha Stringer Lee, Charles Rollo Peters,
William Ritschel, Norton Bush, Carl Dahlgren, Edwin Deakin, and Paul Dougherty.
Staff at MÖBIUS recently concluded the conservation of a large
painting by Frank L. Heath depicting the Monterey Bay from the rolling
hills of Santa Cruz for the Santa Cruz City and County Public Library.
The elaborate, antique frame was also restored. The entire artwork measures
six by eight feet, weighs over 250 pounds, and hangs ten feet high upon the wall.
MÖBIUS completed the conservation of a large sculpture by
Dennis Oppenheim in a joint project for the Santa Cruz Museum of
Art & History and the San Jose Museum of Art. The artwork is entitled
"Cow with Musical Notes" and was previously damaged in transport.
Chris recently completed working with one of his student interns, Ami Davis, Education
Coordinator at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art & History, on the conservation of
a John Ross Key (son of Francis Scott Key) landscape depicting the city of
Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay in 1876 for the Museum of Art & History. This painting was
used in an exhibit pertaining to the philosophy, science, and methods of art conservation
to stabilize and revitalize artworks and objects of cultural and historic significance.
Student interns working in our lab and studio learn many of the
necessary skills in art conservation, the ethics of a conservation intervention,
museum methods and procedures, scientific methods, and practical business
principles for conservators in private practice.
