Services
We offer comprehensive art preservation and conservation services for
individuals and private clients, antique and art dealers, art galleries, picture
framers, museums, libraries, interior designers, fire and flood recovery
services, and serious art collectors. However, many of our best clients
retain us to conserve and restore a single painting that is of significant
sentimental value and has been handed down through the family such
as a family portrait, memorable landscape, or decorative art.
Painting conservation and restoration usually entails:
the removal of surface dirt and grime
the removal of discolored varnish
repair of tears, holes, and losses
lining of deteriorated canvases to stable supports
the consolidation of fragile elements or materials
treating surface deformations such as cupping, tenting, flaking, powdering
stretching old canvases to existing or conservation quality stretcher bars
varnishing to create the proper optical properties of a finished painting
inpainting (retouching) of losses requiring accurate color matching and texturing
Frame Restoration
Often we are called upon to restore antique, gilded frames by recasting
missing ornamentation, consolidating broken elements, applying metal leafing,
and creating a final patina that is consistent with aged frames of antiquity.
Picture Framing
We also provide museum quality, archival framing using museum replicas and
period piece frames appropriate to the paintings we treat. These may be small
and delicate to substantial and ornamented. We can also construct completely
unique, hand made frames with a myriad of compo ornaments to suit your own
design concepts. Typically, the framing will create the prime visual and aesthetic
compliment to enhance the conservation treatment of the painting. Framing
materials and strategies are always dedicated to longevity and conservation standards.
Archival Storage Consultation
Fine art requires a stable environment with limited temperature and relative
humidity changes. We utilize suitable archival boxes for long term storage
along with acid free interleaving or mylar encapsulation. We are available to
consult on other physical parameters of safe long term storage or for crate
construction.
Research and Auction Records
Too little time in your busy day to do the necessary research on your art?
We have access to data bases and research materials to investigate your
artwork or artist. We can often generate a comprehensive list of auction
records for your artist to help you establish comparable valuation.
We do not appraise or authenticate fine art. There are other
specialists who perform this function so we can make
appropriate referrals.
Dealing with Insurance Companies
We can work directly with insurance companies to assist you in the conservation
and restoration of damaged artworks for which you have a valid claim.
Condition Surveys and Documentation
Sometimes collections require a thorough examination to document their existing
condition prior to treatments, storage, or for various insurance requirements. We
provide on site examinations which are followed up with comprehensive
written and/or photographic documentation.
Photographic Documentation
Before, during, and after treatment photos are available plus details of key
pictorial elements and signatures. Photography under different lighting
conditions can serve as diagnostic tools or permanent records. We provide
color or black and white images, slides, or digital images.
On Location Treatments
Occasionally, we are called upon to move our lab on location to work on
oversize pieces of art which would not travel well.
Disaster Mitigation
We are prepared to intervene for safe collection management in the event of
natural disasters like fires, floods, earthquakes, locust invasions, and alien invasions.
Pest Management
Vermin of all types can ruin art collections. We can create anoxic chambers
for insect infestation, micro-climates, or recommend procedures for
termite control with an eye toward your collection needs.
Environmental Concerns
We can assist clients in making appropriate decisions about the conditions
under which art is stored or displayed. This can include temperature,
humidity, lighting, etc.
