The LGB Society at Leeds University Union is large and very socially active, running three events each week (the main social, plus Man Friday and Friday Girls).
Last Year (97-98) we had almost 100 members, with a roughly equal split between men and women, and between lesbian/gay and bisexual. A policy of inclusion is implemented to ensure that our main socials appeal equally well to as many members as possible, though we're not afraid to run events with a more minority interest once in a while. In fact, we've often found that these minority events attract many people from outside of the intended audience.
The society is run by a committee of up to nine people, elected just before Easter, but at any time of the year there are opportunities to get involved - just contact a member of the committee if you're interested. Each committee member has one or more defined roles and there are reserved places for women, men and bisexuals to ensure fair representation.
Since the introduction of an LGB Representative Officer position within the union in 96-97, the society has concentrated its efforts on providing social events, ranging from discos and scene tours to vodka jelly parties and bingo. Political activities are organised by the LGB Officer through the medium of the LGB Forum and educational activities are collaborative efforts. Currently there is no LGB Representative Officer - contact the university union for details.
Another new feature in 96-97 was the introduction of Leeds Student Friend which is a listening and information line specifically for LGB students in Leeds.
You can join the society for a small fee , either come along to the Societies' Bazaar in Introweek, pop up to the LGB Resource Centre or come along to an event. The membership contribution is used to fund society activities .
