  Cranberry Juice, Vitamin C and Pyridium

§   Cranberry juice is somewhat effective as a prophylactic agent however, it cannot be consumed in large enough quantities to acidify the urine and probably works by interfering with bacterial adherence.  Its effectiveness overall is questionable

§   Vitamin C – not proven effective for UTI’s

§   Patients need to maintain normal hydration, forced fluids have never been proven beneficial

 

Pyridium – phenazopyridine

·   an azo dye, is excreted in the urine where it exerts a topical analgesic effect on urinary tract mucosa; therefore, use only for relief of symptoms

·   100-200 mg 2-3 times/day after meals. It is recommended not to administer for > 2 days

·   Headache; rash; pruritus; occasional GI disturbances; anaphylactoid-like reaction; methemoglobinemia; hemolytic anemia; renal and hepatic toxicity (usually at overdosage levels); staining of contact lenses, May cause a reddish orange discoloration of the urine and may stain fabric

·   Should not be used in patients with significant renal or hepatic insufficiency
