YOUNG LIONS DEFEAT
GREATER METROPOLITAN
From GMSSRL coach Jim

Playing the final match of their six-match tour of South-East Queensland, the touring Great Britain/Ireland 16 Year Schoolboys scored a resounding 26-6 win over Greater Metropolitan Secondary Schools at Dolphin Oval Redcliffe on July 25. The game was the main curtain-raiser to the Redcliffe - Wests State League clash.
The Young Lions had the better of the first half, largely through Metros' inability to control possession. This saw them spend most of the first half playing out of their defensive end. The home team's lack of communication and direction in attack contrasted with the tourists' disciplined approach to support play and finishing.
At half-time the Young Lions led 20-0.
Metros made better use of the ball in the second half. However their choice of options was lacking, and they failed to capitalise on some chances. But they lifted their defence, and the bustling effort caused some errors and frustration from the tourists, leading to a string of penalties being awarded against them.
With the second half finishing at 6-6, the Metros had finally shown what they were capable of. The first half lack of cohesion could be attributed to their limited preparation.
Young Lions' Tour Manager Ray Unsworth commented that he thought the Metro boys had gone well against a quality opposition. He said there is no doubt that Aussie kids don't mind the physical stuff, and are prepared to tackle.
Mr Unsworth said he was disappointed by the lack of discipline from his lads. He said they did not cope well with the spoiling defence of the Metro team in the second half.
Overall, all
Greater Metropolitan players performed well. However special
mention must go to Josh McCormick, Luke Sharp, Drew Hoet and
Jefferson Woods. Josh was Metro's player of the match, while Luke
Shew was named player of the match from both sides.
