Custom User Interfaces

The word "exciting" rarely surfaces in discussions of relational databases, but it truly applies when the user interface is customized. Developing an interface that simplifies user input and maintenace activites saves time, decreases the possibility of data corruption and offers an interface that you will be proud to present to users.

Figure 1.1 shows an example of a music inventory database, created in MS Access.

  • Shadowed text element in the header.

  • Easy navigational buttons to perform database tasks.
  • Functional and presentable user interface.

Figure 1.2 shows the main input/viewing screen. Among it's features are:

  • Tab-ordered input boxes.

  • Shadowed text elements (including white font Recording Artist's name in header) that auto-updates as information is input into the field below.
  • Subform of track information.
  • Dropdown selection (combo) boxes for quick, accurate input.
  • Enbedded album cover art graphic.
  • Enbedded "clip" source for listening to audio samples.
