Marikina City is under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Police
District of the Philippine National Police. As of December 1996, maintenance of peace and
order in Marikina was being handled by 227 law enforcers. The operational jurisdiction of
these personnel has been divided into sixteen (16) police blocks and a central
headquarters.
The Marikina Police is equipped with 16 traffic/patrol vehicles,
12 motorcycles and communication facilities such as radio transceivers and handheld
radios.
Aside from the formal national police organization, support
units are provided by the local government such as, Police Traffic Aides with 54 personnel
and the Auxiliary Police Force with 100 personnel.
The city government of Marikina also established a Local Peace
and Order Council pursuant to Executive Order No. 309 as amended, Series of 1988 which
also created the peoples Law Enforcement Board to look into complaints by civilians
against members of the police force.
Crime statistics for the period 1994 to 1996 is shown in Table
12. The total number of crimes committed in 1996 is 410 or a decrease of 8% or 36 compared
with 1995. Of the total crimes committed, 27% were crimes against property and only 14%
were crimes against chastity.
