In 1920 Hibbert and Buckland
started trading. Their earliest
customer was a wholesaler who
owned a brand name and traded
under the name 'Pretty Polly',
however in 1926 he sold the brand
name to Hibbert and Buckland.
The name came from the famous
filly - Pretty Polly, who won three
classic horse races! With the
advent of nylon the company
produced 2500 pairs of stockings
per day. The company HQ has a
print of the painting of the horse.
Henry J Heinz born in 1844 lived in
Sharpsburgh, near Pittsburg.
When he was 16yrs old he began
to bottle horseradish in clear glass
bottles and offered a reckless
money back guarantee on his
products.

In 1890 he formed the Heinz Noble
and company selling the Anchor
brands food products. But in 1875
the US suffered a depression
forcing the company into
liquidation. Heinz to his credit
vowed to repay all his creditors,
which he achieved in 1884.

In 1876 he persuaded his brother
and cousin to start the F & J
Heinz company. Henry J Heinz
made his famous visit to England
in June 1886 to visit Fortnum and
Mason, purveyors to The Queen
and London's famous grocery
store.
On tasting his seven samples the
Head of Grocery Purchasing gave
Heinz the famous quote
" I think Mr Heinz, we will take the
lot." By 1888 he bought out his
brother John and cousin Frederick
to form HJ Heinz Company.
The 57 Varieties was his invention,
as it appealed to him. They were
selling over 60 brands at the time.
Today they sell 1,200 products,
but in his honour the 57 Varieties
remain on their products today!
