Stanley Gibbons started life as a
Chemist? Edward Stanley Gibbons was born in 1840, they year the first STAMP was created.
By 1854 the art of stamp
collecting began. He had a book of 20 stamps. At 15yrs old he left school, entered a bank, but as his brother died, he was told to follow his fathers trade into their own chemist. He branched out into stamp collecting. In 1863 two sailors sold him a mailbag full of Cape of Good Hope triangular stamps for 5. He estimated his profit as 500! Another event was when a postmaster in Australia forwarded 20 worth of unused stamps, remarking he had sending 120 of the 2d stamps printed in the colours of the 6d stamp. These rare mauve 2d stamps of 1879 are now worth about 6000! |
