William Wrigley moved to Chicago
in 1891, 29yrs old with ambition to
start his own business. He
decided to sell soap offering
premiums of baking powder free
with his products. He learnt that
the baking powder was more
popular than the soap, so he gave
up the soap to sell baking powder!
In 1892 he had the brilliant idea to
offer two packets of chewing gum
free with each can of baking
powder. It was a big SUCCESS.
The chewing gum was more
popular than the baking powder,
and he believed it had a potential
for the future?
This first brands were LOTTA
GUM and VASSAR, then a year
later JUICY FRUIT. He
concentrated on a SPEARMINT
flavour for his expansion in 1916.
The 1907 business slump forced
other companies to slash prices,
Wrigley advertised extensively to
gain more sales. His gum became
the US favourite in 1901, so he
produced PK Chewing Gum to his
range of products. Factories
opened in Australia in 1915 and
England in 1927.
With WWII the US forces
overeseas spread the interest in
gum, so much that by 1944, the
entire production served US forces
mostly abroad. Catch phrases at
the time where " Got any gum,
chum?". Today the company has
sales of $1 billion per year.
