PATHOGENS and BACTERIA CONTROL

There is no doubt this is the most important aspect of using hydroponics in the tropics. Without these controls it is not possible to achieve commercial production rates of produce.

Because of the high temperatures and humidity experienced in the tropics, pathogens and bacteria thrive. They are the natural enemies of the plants and quickly attack the root zone resulting in early plant termination. Maybe you will never even get the plants to fruiting stage before they wilt and die.

Understanding these problems in hydroponics in the tropics, Advance Hydroponics has developed “cutting edge” technology to combat and eradicate the problems. We use computerized electronic Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP) generators running at very high voltage and low amperage to “zap” all pathogens in the nutrient lines feeding the NFT systems.

What is ORP?

Oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) is a measure of a solutions oxidizing or reducing strength. An oxidizing agent has a potential to acquire electrons and become reduced while a reducing agent has a potential to donate electrons and become oxidized. When electrons are transferred from one species to another in a chemical reaction, the reaction is called an oxidation-reduction reaction. Oxidation and reduction reactions occur together, the electrons generated by a reduction reaction must be acquired by an oxidation reaction. The electron transfer between the two species continues until an equilibrium is reached.

Advance Hydroponics ORP Generator?

The ozone-producing electrodes are the Corona Discharge type, having a ABS tubular outer cell with an internal glass dielectric. The dielectric has a glass probe orp-generator applied to the inner surface and is connected to the high voltage power supply, with the screen tube acting as the ground. Between the Stainless Steal tube screen and the dielectric glass is an air gap. When power is applied to the assembly, a high-intensity corona is formed in the air gap. The oxygen-enriched feed gas stream passes through the air gap and the intense corona (violet in color) converts a percentage of the oxygen to ozone. The air gap and frequency of the power supply is adjusted for optimum corona density for maximum ozone output per square centimeter of electrode surface area.

Prior to the introduction of ORP to the nutrient solution feeding system, it was common practice to use chemicals for the eradication of pathogens and bacteria. orp_diag These chemicals are chlorine and or hydrogen peroxide. There are distinct problems arising from their use, (i) overdosing will damage the plants, (ii) the pathogens become "super" and immune to the treatment, (iii) the "purists" avoid the introduction of chemicals into hydroponics culture.

Results
