Chapter 8

Financial Statements

 

Time:                          5-50 minute periods

 

Chapter 8 Objectives:

 

1.     Understand the terminology and components that make-up an income statement.

2.     Demonstrate the ability to construct an income statement using information from a worksheet.

3.     Understand the component percentage and be able to calculate it.

4.     Understand why we use financial statements and how they are used to make good business decisions. 

5.     Understand the terminology and components which make-up a balance sheet. 

6.     Demonstrate the ability to construct a balance sheet using information from a worksheet.

 

Materials Needed:            pen/pencil, eraser, chalk, dry-eraser marker, daily attendance sheet,

teacher’s edition text book, lesson plan for the week, paper, handouts, seating chart, grade book, attendance book, overhead projector, transparencies

 

Week Overview:

 

            Day 1-            Introduce financial statements, why we use them, create one

Day 2-            Review income statements, Introduce component percentages, Introduce             balance sheets, create one

            Day 3-            Review balance sheets, tie up loose ends of Chapter 8

            Day 4-            Review, study guide

            Day 5-            Test

 

Teacher Pre-week activities:

 

1.     Look over Chapter 7 test and make sure the class is ready to move on with Chapter 8.

2.     Prepare transparencies and handouts ready.

3.     Change bulletin board so it coincides with Chapter 8 material.

4.     Review lesson plan for the week.

Day 1-Chapter 8

Financial Statements

Time:                          Day 1-50 minute period

 

Day 1 Objectives:    

                        After this class students will be able to:

                       

1.     Understand the importance of financial statements to businesses and explain why they are used.

2.     Explain the terminology used in an income statement.

3.     Know the components of an income statement.

4.     Create an income statement using information gathered from a worksheet.

 

Materials Needed:            pen/pencil, eraser, chalk, dry-eraser marker, daily attendance sheet,

teacher’s edition text book, lesson plan for the day, paper, handouts, seating chart, grade book, attendance book, overhead projector, transparencies

 

Pre-class activities:       

1.     Get daily attendance sheet.

2.     Make sure overhead projector is working properly.

3.     Make sure I have proper transparencies and handouts for today’s lesson.

4.     Review lesson plan.

 

Class Activities:

 

1.     Monitor hallway                               Greet students at the door with a “Hi” or

                                                                        “Hello.”

 

2.     Class Welcome                            Tell them to clear their minds because we

      Time: 2 minutes                                     will be tackling Chapter 8 beginning today

                                                                        and ending with a test on the fifth day.

 

3.     Class Attendance                         Take attendance.  Make sure to mark it on

      Time: 3 minutes                                     the daily attendance sheet and in the class

4.     Introduce financial statements        Explain what financial statements are:

      Time: 5 minutes                                     Income statements and Balance sheets.

 

                                                                        Ask the class why they think financial

                                                                        statements are important to a business.

                                                                        Talk about a business making good

                                                                        business decisions by using financial

                                                                        statements.

 

5.     Introduce terms included                  Handout A and Overhead A.  Discuss

      in Income statements                                each term and section of an income

      Time: 5 minutes                                     statement.

 

6.  Explain Handout B                                            Explain to the students that I have given

       Time: 2 minutes                                     them a handout of the steps for preparing

                                                                        an income statement, to use as a reference

                                                                        when creating an income statement.

 

7.     Show example of an income         Go over the headings, titles, amount

                                                                        (Overhead C).  Have the students check

                                                                        their numbers to make sure they have the

                                                                        correct calculations and result. 

 

9.  Introduction of homework                            Write the homework on the board.  Students

     Time: 5 minutes                                     should review income statements and read

                                                                        pages 182-186.  Instruct them to especially

                                                                        pay attention to page 184, as we will be

                                                                        going over component percentages

                                                                        tomorrow.  Also tell them to glance over

                                                                        pages 187-190, because we will be going

                                                                        over them in the next two days.  Assign

                                                                        problem 8.1 from the book and tell them to

                                                                        leave the component percentage blank,

                                                                        because we will be going over that

                                                                        tomorrow.

 

10. Writing Reflection               Have students write and reflect what they

       Time: 4 minutes                                     learned today.  Remind them that this

                                                                        journal is for only them, and that it will help                                                                              them get ready for the test.

 

11. End-of-lesson wrap-up                         Remind students to bring the handouts from

      Time: 2 minutes                                     today to class tomorrow.  Review why we

                                                                        use financial statements.  Tell them you

                                                                        will see them tomorrow.

5.  Introduce component percentages                  Handout A and Overhead A.  Explain what

     Time: 8 minutes                                     the component percentage is used for in a

                                                                        business and how a business uses it to

                                                                        compare its net income to expenses.  Go

                                                                        through the formulas and then show an

                                                                        example using there homework from

                                                                        yesterday.  Have them take their homework

                                                                        out and calculate the component percentage

                                                                        with you as I demonstrate on the overhead.

 

6.     Introduce Balance sheets                     Handout B and Overhead B.  Go over

      Time: 5 minutes                                     terms and components which are

                                                                        included in a balance sheet.  Explain that

                                                                        balance sheets are used to indicate the

                                                                        financial condition of a business.  It refers

                                                                        to a businesses financial strength. 

 

7.     Create a Balance sheet                      Have students pull out Handout B from

       Time: 17 minutes                                     yesterday (worksheet).  Use information

                                                                        from the worksheet to create a balance sheet

                                                                        on Handout C.  Have them work with a

                                                                        partner on their balance sheet, but remind

                                                                        them that they both will need to complete

                                                                        a balance sheet of their own, they will be

                                                                        using each other as reference.  Teacher will

                                                                        go around and make sure the students are on

                                                                        task, and answering any questions they may

                                                                        have.  Refer them to page 187 to see an

                                                                        example of a balance sheet.  Remind them

                                                                        that debits must equal credits.

 

 

 

 

8.  Introduction of homework                            Write homework on the board.  Have

     Time: 4 minutes                                     students open to page 193 in their book

                                                                        and look at problem 8.2.  Tell them they

                                                                        will complete this problem for tomorrow.

                                                                        Ask if there are any questions.

 

9.     Writing reflection                            Ask students to take out their journals

      Time: 4 minutes                                     and reflect what they have learned

                                                                        throughout today’s lesson.

 

10. End-of-lesson Wrap-up                Remind students once again the importance

      Time: 2 minutes                                     of financial statements.  Also remind

                                                                        students to bring handouts from today

                                                                        to class tomorrow.  Tell them you will

                                                                        see them tomorrow.

3.     Create financial statements using information gathered from a worksheet.

teacher’s edition text book, lesson plan for the day, paper, handouts, seating chart, grade book, attendance book, overhead projector, transparencies

4.     Review material from yesterday          Go over component percentages.  Show the

                                                                        percentages are used.  Explain how

                                                                        businesses use the percentage to see where

                                                                        there business stands by comparing it to

                                                                        a standard number.  Also review balance

                                                                        sheet terminology and components.  Ask

                                                                        students for answers.

 

5.     Go over problem 8.3 from book                Have students open books to page 194 and

       with class on overhead                             look at problem 8.3.  Have them use

                                                                        information in problem 8.4.  Have

volunteer students come up to the overhead and fill in some of the parts of the two

financial statements.

2.     Know what to expect on their test, which will be given tomorrow.

3.     Have any questions answered about the test and Chapter 8.

 

Materials Needed:            pen/pencil, eraser, chalk, dry-eraser marker, daily attendance sheet,

teacher’s edition text book, lesson plan for the day, paper, handouts, seating chart, grade book, attendance book, overhead projector, transparencies

 

Pre-class activities:

3.     Make sure I have proper transparencies and handouts for today’s lesson.

examining an ethics case and discussing it.  Tell them the rest of the time will be

4.  Ethics Case                                                 Have students open their books to page 101

     Time: 23 minutes                                     and look at the ethics case.  Explain that we

                                                                        skipped over this in Chapter 6, but we are

                                                                        going to go back because ethics are very

                                                                        important in the world of accounting. 

                                                                        Handout A will be used to answer the

                                                                        questions about the ethics case.  Have

                                                                        students critical think about the scenario

                                                                        remind them that there is no right or wrong

                                                                        answer.  Remind them that ethics can effect

                                                                        a lot of people, or it can effect yourself.  It

                                                                        is more like a way of morals, and only you

                                                                        yourself can determine your own set of

                                                                        ethics for yourself.  Ethics case will be used

                                                                        as a discussion for the class and students

                                                                        will fill out the sheet as we discuss each

                                                                        item. 

 

5.     Review Crossword puzzle                     Handout B and Overhead B.  Have students

       Time: 12 minutes                                     work on the cross word puzzle of review

                                                                        terms.  After they have completed it, show

                                                                        answers on the overhead. 

 

6.     Ask students if they have any last             Remind the students that the test is

1.     Turn in their homework and journal.

2.     Complete Chapter 8 test. 

 

Materials Needed:            pen/pencil, eraser, chalk, dry-eraser marker, daily attendance sheet,

teacher’s edition text book, lesson plan for the day, paper, handouts, seating chart, grade book, attendance book, overhead projector, transparencies, Chapter 8 tests, extra pencils, extra erasers, extra calculators

Pre-class activities:       

1.     Get daily attendance sheet.

2.     Make sure overhead projector is working properly.

3.     Make sure I have proper transparencies and handouts for today’s lesson.

4.     Review lesson plan.

 

Class Activities:

 

1.     Monitor hallway                               Greet students at the door with a “Hi” or

                                                                        “Hello.”

 

2.     Class Welcome                            Tell them today is test day.  Tell them that

      Time: 2 minutes                                     they will have the entire class period

                                                                        to complete the test.  If there are any

                                                                        questions, tell them raise their hand

                                                                        and I will quickly come around and

                                                                        answer their question.

 

3.     Class Attendance                         Take attendance.  Make sure to mark it on

      Time: 3 minutes                                     the daily attendance sheet and in the class

                                                                        attendance book.

 

 

 

 

4.     Have students hand their journals            Each student will bring their journal

                                                                        during the test and make sure students

                                                                        are understanding the test.

 

8.     Collect any tests that may still be out.      Make sure all tests are collected.

       Time: 2 minutes

 

9.     End-of-lesson wrap-up                 Tell the students that they will have their
