MARIO PROFILE

Mario, is hands down, one of the most popular video game characters of all.  He has starred in tons of games since his debut in Donkey Kong, in the arcades. Since then, he has become Nintendo's mascot, and one of the most popular characters in video game history.
He has starred in games that have created and perfected new and revolutionary video game genres. With Donkey Kong being one of the first games ever, not to mention one of the first games where you actually did something more than shoot enemies from a little ship, or eat pellets. And with the advent of the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), he became the first character to ever star in a side-scrolling game. With Super Mario Bros. for the NES, Mario was able to move either left of right, and the screen would scroll forward or back, a first back then.  Even at that time, Mario had already starred in two other games, Donkey Kong, and Mario Bros. (without the "Super" attached on to it), both of them were arcade games.
And from then on, he was a star.
Actually, when Donkey Kong first came out, he didn't really have a official name, he was just called "Jump Man", but was named Mario, after his resemblence to Nintendo's land lord of the same name.
Mario has mainly starred on systems by Nintendo: the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System), Super NES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System), Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket, Game Boy Color, Virtual Boy, and Nintendo 64. But he has also been in games for the computer (well, most weren't really games, but  typing tutores), and games for the CD-I from Philips (Nintendo let them use the license to some of there biggest franchise characters, including Mario and Link/Zelda). But most games were for the Nintendo systems listed above.
The story of Mario's life is really. . . . well . . . . non-existent. All we really know about our favorite hero is that he has a brother named Luigi, has been a plumber for most of his career, is Italian, and has been fighting Bowser to save Princess Toadstool (Peach), ever since Super Mario Bros. debut. Everything else about Mario is shrouded in mystery.
The only game that has anything to suggest some kind of overall story, is the game Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. In which it explains that while a stork was delevering Mario and Luigi to his parents, they were kidnapped by Kamek, a evil Magikoopa from Koopa Land. But, in trying to snatch both babies from the stork, it only grabs Luigi, and Mario gets knocked out of the stork's beak, and falls onto Yoshi's back, who was walking around at Yoshi's Island. Once Kamek gets home, he realizes that he only snatched one baby, and sends his Toadies out to get the other one. Falling with Mario comes a map, and Mario starts pointing in a certain direction from the island. The Yoshi's there discover that Mario, since he's a twin of Luigi, can feel were the other one is, so the Yoshis' decide to carry Mario to his destination. And that's it, that's the only kind of story we know about Mario, not much huh.
Despite not having a true story, Mario has starred in many, many, many, games, more than any other video game character. He has been everything from a referee and go-kart driver, to a docter. Some of the many games are:

Most of these games have Mario as a starring character, but there are many more than that. And there are lots of games where he makes cameo appearences.
Mario almost always dresses in the same clothes: a red undershirt, blue overalls, red cap with a M in the middle (standing for Mario) and brown shoes. He has bushy black hair (usually covered by his cap), dark side-burns, and a full black mustache. Mario has a very Italin accent, and so does his brother Luigi.
In most Mario games, he is trying to save Princess Toadstool (Peach) from the clutches of the evil Bowser. But he has fought other enemies too, such as Donkey Kong and Wario.
Mario is and probably always will be, one of the most popular video game characters ever created. A character from the mind of the great game designer Shigeru Mayimoto. And his career is still far from over . . .

As you can tell, Mario's a pretty popular guy, with video games, and even toys and everyday items with him on them. Although a lot of these things are pretty old, Mario will continue to populate items of everyday use, at least we hope ;-)
