Dental Care for the Homeless
Since 1994, the Dental Clinic at HEP has been serving the dental needs of homeless and very low- income individuals of our community. The dental care provided enhances employment prospects, improves quality of life, self-esteem, and confidence. In addition, dental care is provided for children of homeless and low-income persons. These children receive necessary dental treatments and education for prevention and early oral health. In 1997, the volunteer Dentists and Hygienists performed approximately 1695 procedures.
The Dental Clinic on-site at HEP is unique in the fact that it is the only one of its kind in our community. It has become apparent that dental services for homeless and low-income families and individuals are in great demand, and the services provided have been proven essential. Some of the clients who are receiving these services have never seen a dentist before and are able to receive treatment for the very first time in their lives. Persons who are unable to obtain a job, in need of cosmetic dentistry due to the loss of teeth, receive crowns, bridges, partials, or complete dentures and are given a new outlook on life and improved self-esteem. This, in-turn increases employment opportunities.
We are grateful to all the volunteers who contribute their time and expertise to the program. The 15 volunteer dentists, 35 hygienists from St. Petersburg Jr. College, and our part time Dental Assistant are the backbone of the program. Volunteer Dentists include:
