Mice are believed to have been first domesticated in China. There are now over 500 combinations of coat type and color available. They have poor eyesight but an excellent sense of smell. Unlike hamsters, mice should be kept in groups of two or more. If kept singly, they may become neurotic. Two or three may be kept in a 10 gallon aquarium with a tight fitting lid. Female mice (known as does) have a less strong odor and are less likely to fight so they may be preferred as pets. Pine shavings make good bedding. The cage should be cleaned at least once a week. Water should be provided in a water bottle. Mice love to play on hamster wheels.
