what to say about Genma is a big fat panda and a retard 
with a napkin on his head and to what end this prevails I do not know?

Saotome is Ranma's
father who took 
him when he was a lad from his home in Japan to the Jusenkyo springs in
China. Ignoring the Jusenkyo
Guide's warnings (not that he knew any Chinese), Genma and Ranma
fought atop the poles. In the sparring match, Genma fell in the Spring
Of Drowned Panda, Shonmaonichuan. And now, due to the Jusenkyo
curse, Genma transforms into a panda when splashed with cold water, and
changes back when splashed with hot water.

Genma is a thief, a bandit, a slob, and just about everything you wish
you weren't. His life on the road with his son eventually gave him
a mean attitude, and he and Ranma fight every morning (about 12 feet in
the air). As a panda, he usually just sits around watching TV, and
speaks through words he writes on signs because pandas can't talk.
Genma and Soun
Tendo have known each other since they were boys training under
Happosai,
when they promised to wed their children to carry on their school.
He is an excellent martial artist, and, despite his appearance, even more
so than Ranma. He often lectures Ranma on his actions towards Akane
and sometimes beats him up about it. However, he chooses to let Ranma
or somebody else convienient at the time fight his battles.
