Flourite | Onyx |
It doesn't affect water chemistry.
Buffers the water, raising GH, KH, and pH. This can be a valuable advantage if you have very soft water, or if you use
a Carbo-Plus, which depletes the KH of the water and can cause pH crashes. OTOH, it can be a real pain if you want soft, acid water.
It's quite attractive - a very natural-looking mix of red, brown, tan gravel.
It's also very attractive, and many people prefer the dark gray color to Flourite's brown.
It's easier to set up and plant than Onyx, because it's not as fine and messy.
The larger grains hold down the plants better.
The finer, sand-like texture is great for both delicate plant roots and
bottom-dwelling fish. Once everything is planted, the sand texture is easier
to handle than the relatively coarse Flourite gravel. Fish like catfish and loaches love it.
NOTES: Flourite now comes in two different colors: original and red. The red Flourite is very red.
It's not as natural-looking or as pretty as regular Flourite, IMO.
NOTES: Onyx comes in two textures, Sand and Gravel. I much prefer the sand. The gravel is too coarse - even coarser than Flourite.
