Central District Hikes

Lewis Spring Falls

Mile 51.4

2-1/2 hour

This hike to a 2.5 round trip that will take you to an 80 foot waterfall. You will need to park in the small parking area next to the service road. You will follow this road downhill, crossing the horse trail twice and the A.T. once. Turn left on the blue-blazed trail and descend 0.6 mile to a trail junction. Take the side trail to the left, and go 50 yards to a viewpoint at the top of the falls. Retrace you steps to complete this 2-1/2 hour hike.  


Mill Prong

Mile 52.8

1-1/2 hour

This is a 1 mile round trip to a beautiful stream. Park at Milam Gap Parking Area on the west side of the Drive. The trail will begin across the Drive, taking you through an old orchard. Retrace your step to complete the 1-1/2 hour hike.


Bearfence

Mile 56.4

1-1/4 hour

Note: The hike to the rock scramble is not recommended if you have a fear of heights or during inclement weather. 

    This is a 1.2 mile circuit or round trip hike to either a rock scramble or a viewpoint. You will need to park in the parking area on the west side of the Drive. Cross the Drive and follow Bearfence Trail to the A.T. At the intersection turn right on to the A.T. At the next concrete marker, turn left, up a short, steep trail that ends in a "T" intersection. For the easier viewpoint, go uphill a short distance and look for a narrow path on right leading to the viewpoint. Retrace your steps  back to the "T". For the rocky summit, turn left a the "T" and follow the blue blazes on rocks to the summit. This route continues over boulders with outstanding view to complete the loop. You will need to use your hands and feet on the rock scramble. Follow the blue blazes as you complete this 1-1/4 hours hike. Pets are not allowed on this trail.  


Pocosin Mission

Mile 59.5

2 hour

This is a 1.9 mile round trip hike to the site of a former church and mountaineer settlement. You will need to park  in the parking area 60 yards down the fire road on the east side. Follow the fire road past the chain and the A.T. crossing. You will pass the trail to the to the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club cabin. Look for a concrete marker post on the right about a mile down and turn onto the yellow-blazed Pocosin Trail. The mission area is about a hundred feet on the left. Retrace your step to complete this 2 hour hike.


Baldface Mountain

Mile 61.8

3/4 hour

This is a 1 mile hike to a view point. You will be looking for an old dirt road on the west side of the Drive. Park on the grass, ensuring that you are completely off the road. Follow the blocked off, abandoned road on the east side to the A.T. Turn left onto the A.T. Follow the A.T. trail to the ledge with views. Retrace you step to complete this 3/4 hour hike.
