South District  Waterfall Hikes

South River Falls

83 feet

2.6 miles roundtrip

1-1/2 hours

This is a moderate hike to the third highest falls in the park. You need to park in the South Ricer Picnic Area on the east side of the Drive at mile 62.8. The trailhead starts at the third parking area. Take the trail for 0.1 mile or so until you reach a trailpost and intersection of the A.T. Follow the blue-blazed tail until you reach a series of switchbacks in which you will hear the South River on your right. You will cross two small streams and then a rock cliff on the left. The trail will open up to a rock fenced observation point. To complete this hike, retrace your steps.

Doyles River Falls

28 feet & 63 feet

3.2 mile roundtrip

2 hours

This hike will take you to two different waterfalls. The first one is the smallest of 28 feet which is nice but the lower one is 63 feet and is very close to the trail which makes it a great set of falls. You will start this hike at the Doyles River Parking Area located at mile 81.1 and on the east side of the Drive. This is a trailhead map that begins this hike. A few steps in and you will come upon the intersection of the A.T. Follow the blue-blazed trail for 0.3 mile and you will see a spring in a pipe on you left. Don't drink the water unless you purify it first. Once you pass the spring, the trail will fork and you need to follow the right side. Further on down you will cross to small streams and start to hear Doyles River on your right. You will come across Browns Gap Road and a little further you will cross the river. You will use stepping stones to get across which is not difficult. The river is now on your left and you will start to see small falls and pools. You will come to a trail post and the upper falls are on the left. Follow the trail for another 0.3 mile until you reach a set of switchbacks. Once you are through the switchbacks then you will be at the lower falls. To complete this hike, retrace your steps.

Jones Run Falls

42 feet

3.4 miles roundtrip

2 hours

This is a great waterfall and a fairly easy one to hike. You will be starting this hike at the Jones Run Parking Area located at mile 84.1. The trailhead starts at the east side of the parking lot. After a few steps you will see the junction of the A.T. and a trail post. You will bear to the left and follow the blue blazed trail. The trail will start to get steep with the gorge on your right. You will come to a switchback and then the gorge will be on your left. You will travel another 0.5 mile you will reach Jones Run and crossing here is very simple. You will reach an old road that will take you another 0.3 mile and then you will bear to the left and go downhill. You will reach a rocky ledge on the left that will give you a view of the falls. Continue further down the trail through several steep switchbacks and boulders till you reach the bottom of the falls. This is the best viewing point. To complete this hike, retrace your steps.
