DRAGONS

Few creatures of folklore and mythology conjure up the mental images of the dragon. Also known as wurm, wyrm and firedrake, these mercurial creatures pervade almost every pantheon of classical mythology and have become an integral inclusion of an entire genre of fantasy literature.

Physical characteristics of dragons also vary but several consistencies are usually present. The beasts are typically depicted as huge lizards, larger than elephants on average. Long fangs are generally accepted as are twin horns of varying length. Western cultures generally include large bat-like wings giving the dragon the capability of flight. But eastern dragons, usually wingless, use a more magical means of flying. As well, eastern dragons tend to be more snake-like in nature, albeit with front and rear legs.
Most dragons will be covered in scales, although there are some with a leathery skin. Coloring ranges the entire gamut of the spectrum but red, green, black and gold appear to be the most common. It is also generally accepted that most dragons are magical creatures in nature and have the ability to breathe fire (as a weapon). Some dragons may have a modification in this breath weapon (frost, lightning, gas) but this appears to be purely a fabrication of fantasy role-playing games and the myths they spawn.

Beneath the midnight sky,
Above the bottomless abyss,
There is a vast land,
This land is where the Dragons of the universe live.

They soar above mountains,
And prowl above the trees,
and stalk at night for there prey,
These mighty creatures rule the land.

People came and populated this land,
Mastering the free creatures,
To use them for work and labor,
There are very few free dragons left,
And they hunt and agonize these people.

There are some people that take dragons,
And become companions with them,
but let them fly free as there were meant to be,
And let them trust them instead of forcing them to stay with them.

This is the happening in the dragon land,
That is written down in scrolls and parchments,
to be saved forever in time itself.

Swift and silent in the soft silver light
Cast by the moon on a mythical night
Fear was black, Hope was pure
Caught in a battle forevermore

Two lean bodies of Magic and Earth
Hunted and oppressed since the early birth
Light glittered like a thousand diamonds of the sun
Off the whitened scales of the holy one

Spreading his wings to master the air
To greet the rival he knew would be there
Darkness and Light, Fear and Hope
War with mysticism that humans can’t cope

The other seemed to swallow the day
Chaos and Evil were his way
Long, severed teeth glittered like fire
As his wide, strong wings guided him higher

There they fight; two Guardians of their own
The lairs of mystical Earth they make their home
They are two Dragons to the very core
But Oh, to the observer, they are so much more
