Facts and Myths

F&MThe oldest cells in the body are found in the crystalline lens.

F&MAround 60% of all people are hyperopes. However, because the lens is able to adjust its focus, most hyperopes do not need to wear glasses until they are older.

F&MAround 120 million Americans wear eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct nearsightedness, myopia, or astigmatism. That's over 40% of Americans!

F&MReading in dim light does not damage the eyes. It does, however, tend to tire your eyes more quickly. It is best to read with a lot of light.

F&MSitting too close to the TV does not damage vision. Kids can focus on close objects more easily than adults. Occasionally, someone who sits closely to the TV may be doing so because they are myopic. An optometrist can diagnosis this condition and prescribe glasses to help.

F&MColorblindness affects 1 of every 30 Americans. Males are much more likely to be colorblind because it is a sex-linked condition. A male can get the condition if only one of his parents carried the trait. However, a female can only have colorblindness if both parents carried the trait.
