How do we see?
��������Believe it or not, we see with our brains! All the processing involved in producing what we see happens in the brain. The eyeball itself only focuses the light to the retina. The retina is actually an extension of the brain - the first part of the brain to begin processing of the light. But lets start with the light first.
��������The light that reflects off objects and heads toward our eye first strikes the cornea. The cornea is a powerful lens that bends the light. The light then travels through the aqueous, being bent more. After the light goes through the pupil, it then hits the lens, which bends the light more to focus it on the retina. When it leaves the lens, it will go through the vitreous then finally strike the retina.
��������Cells at the back of the retina, called photoreceptors, absorb the light and start an electrical signal. This signal will then travel through the optic nerve on its way to the visual cortex. This is the region at the back of the brain that is responsible for organizing the signals into our perception. The visual cortex helps us put the images together into everything we see such as motion, texture, and depth. There are so many complex processes going on in our brain to help us see, that we are only just beginning to to understand how it all works!

What does 20/20 mean?
��������The term 20/20 has to do with your visual acuity. Your visual acuity is your ability to see small details. One way to write your visual acuity is in this fraction form. The top number is how far away your acuity was tested - 20 feet. The bottom number is the size of the letter. When stated in this form - 20/20 - it means that when you stand at 20 feet, the smallest letter you are able to see is the same size as a person with normal vision can see at 20 feet. If someone has 20/40 vision, the smallest letter he can see at 20 feet is the same size that a person with normal vision could see at 40 feet.
��������Young people can normally see as well as 20/15 or even 20/10. If your visual acuity is 20/10, then you can see details so small that the normal adult would have to move in to 10 feet to see it! Many things can cause a person's acuity to be low. There are lots of diseases that can change a person's acuity. Myopia and hyperopia refer to conditions in which a person's acuity may be lower than normal. These people need to wear glasses or contacts in order to bring their acuity to the normal level.

Why do people where glasses or contacts?
��������Our eyes are supposed to focus light rays on the retina. For many people though, the light is focused in front of the eye (myopia) or behind the eye (hyperopia). Sometimes the light is not focused as a point but as a line instead (astigmia).
��������For many hyperopes, our lens can adjust the light so that it does focus on the retina. These people may go most of there life without wearing glasses until the lens isn't able to handle the work anymore. For hyperopes whose lens cannot make the adjustment well enough, and for myopes and astigmats, glasses and contacts fix the problem. Myopes wear a lens that will move the focused light back to the retina. Hyperopes wear a lens that moves the light forward to the retina. Astigmats wear lenses that brings the light back to a focused point on the retina. Unfortunately, our eyes can change quite often, especially as we are growing and then later as we are getting older. Because of this, people often have to get the prescription for their glasses changed regularly.

Why are some people blind?
��������A person may be blind due to many different reasons. Some people are born blind. These people may have a retina, an optic nerve, or a visual cortex that does not work. Many diseases may cause blindness by damaging the retina, optic nerve, visual cortex, or the paths between these parts. One of these areas may have been damaged from a hit or during surgery. For these reasons, it is important that everyone have their eyes examined by an optometrist regularly, so that we can make sure that your eyes are healthy and disease free.

What does colorblind mean?
��������Colorblindness means that a person cannot see certain colors (sometimes all colors). In the retina, there are two basic types of light sensitive cells - rods and cones. The rods work best when it is not bright. Cones only work when there is enough light. There are three kinds of cones - red, green, and blue. Each type of cone absorbs certain colors better than other colors (this is why we call them red, green, and blue cones). Each cone actually absorbs lots of different colors (or wavelengths of light), but they perform best to a specific range of wavelengths. When light strikes the retina, the wavelength of that light is usually absorbed by all three cone types. One cone will respond more than the other two if the wavelength is in the range that it likes best. The other two will also respond, just not as much. Depending on how much each cell responds, our brain determines what color the object is.
��������When a person is colorblind, it is usually because one of the cone types is missing. He can still see some colors, depending on which two types are still there, but the color does not appear the same as it does to someone with all three cone types. The brain is not receiving enough information from the retina to figure out what color it is. Another problem might happen if the person has all three cone types, but one of them responds to a different range of wavelengths from the normal person. This person would see colors slighty different from the normal person.

Why do some people's eyes turn in or out?
��������Your eyes move very quickly and precisely because of the eye muscles. There are six extraocular muscles that control eye movements - lateral rectus, medial rectus, superior rectus, inferior rectus, superior oblique, and the inferior oblique. Sometimes, one or more muscles may not be strong enough, may be inserted into the eye at the wrong spot, or may be too strong. If the other muscles cannot make up for these problems, then the eye may be pulled in a different direction other than straight ahead. Cross-eyed (esotropia) is the condition when either one or both of the eyes turn in. When the eyes turn out, it is called wall-eyed (exotropia). One of the eyes may also turn up or down, called hypertropia. Doctors can correct these conditions through surgery or through prescribing prisms in the glasses. Prisms will direct the light toward the eye so that the eye thinks it is looking straight ahead. This will avoid that eye being shut down by the brain.

Why can't I see well when it suddenly gets dark, but can later?
��������Light is absorbed by the retina and sent to the brain as electrical signals to be processed into what we see. There are two types of cells in the retina that absorb the light - rods and cones. The cones are very picky photoreceptors that only work when there is enough light. They are responsible for color vision and seeing details. However, they do not work when it is dark. The rods do work when it is dark. These photoreceptors are the opposite of picky, they are light greedy. They will absorb light all the time. The problem with that is this. When it is bright, the rods are overworked yet barely used by the brain to create what we see (the brain prefers the more detailed signals it gets from the cones). When it quickly gets dark, the cones cannot work. Unfortunately, the rods are still worn out from absorbing all that light. It takes quite a while for the rods to get back to normal so that they can work again. If you go from bright light directly into darkness, it takes the average person up to 35 minutes to completely recover light sensitivity. This process is known as dark adaptation.

Why do I still see an image after looking at something for a long time?
��������This strange experience is called an afterimage. The rods and cones in the retina that absorb light rays are constantly sending signals to the brain about the light being absorbed. They are even sending signals when they aren't absorbing light! The brain compares the relative amounts of signals it is receiving from each cell to create the image. When you stare at something for a long period of time, the rods and cones that are absorbing that image may get overworked. Then, when you look away, they are not able to get back to their normal level of firing. The brain thinks that those cells are firing less because an image is there - in the opposite color or brightness of what it had been seeing. The brain then puts this image together even though it's not really there!

What are those things floating in my vision?
��������You may have noticed small hairlike or circular shaped spots floating in your vision. These objects are called floaters and are best seen when looking at something white. Floaters are dustlike pieces of debris floating in the vitreous in the eyeball. Most floaters are protein bunches from the vitreous or leftover pieces of the arteries and veins that supplied blood to the lens before you were born!

Why do I see lights when I rub my eyes?
��������The cells in the retina that absorb light are called photoreceptors. They are small neurons that are specially designed to absorb light and send a signal to the brain about that light. They are just like the neurons in your skin that absorb pressure when you touch something and send a signal to the brain about how hard you are touching something. When you rub your eyes, you are causing the photoreceptors to fire, just like you do to the touch receptors when you touch something. However, unlike touch receptors, the signal that is sent to the brain by photoreceptors is taken from the brain as if it is light.So you're brain thinks there are lights hitting your eyes, not your hands! Why does it feel like something is still in my eye even after I get it out?
��������When something gets in your eye, like an eyelash or dirt, it is best not to rub your eyes. You should try to wash your eye out with water or let your tears and blinking wash the item out. When you do rub your eyes, whatever is in there is being rubbed over the cornea. Most likely, the object is scratching the surface of the cornea or the inside of the lids. The cornea and eyelids are very sensitive and can feel the smallest scratches on there surfaces. So even after the object is gone, it still feels like it's there, because the cornea and lids feel the scratch.

What is pink eye?
��������Pink eye is another name for conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is an infection of the conjunctiva, the thin covering over the eye and inside of the eyelids. Bacteria, viruses, fungi, or allergies can cause the conjunctiva to become inflamed and sore. Pink eye is contagious and must be treated by an eye doctor.

Why do people have different colored eyes?
��������The colored part of the eye is called the iris. The iris opens and closes the pupil to let more or less light into the eye. Just like skin, the iris comes in many different colors ranging from brown to blue to green and even a purplish color!

Why does the moon look bigger closer to the horizon?
��������You may have always thought that the moon was just closer to the earth, but actually it's an optical illusion. Your brain uses many depth cues to figure out how far away an object is. If an object is determined to be far away, the brain actually enlarges the image! When the moon is high in the sky, there is nothing visible between you and the moon, so the brain has nothing to judge how far away it is. However, when the moon is close to the horizon, there are trees and buildings that the brain use to see that the moon is really far away. Since the brain sees the moon as far away, it makes the image of the moon bigger!
