What would life be like not being able to see? You wouldn't be able to see yourself in the mirror or know if your clothes match. You could no longer play basketball or watch a movie. You would never be able to enjoy seeing the starry night and you could forget about those video games. I'm sure you can think of a million more reasons why your sight is important to you. That is why it is very important that you take care of your eyes! Here are just a few ways to make sure your eyes are safe...

eyeball The number one cause of eye injuries in kids is sports. So when you are playing sports, always wear some kind of protective eyewear. Wear sports goggles for soccer or basketball and have a face shield on the batting helmet you wear for baseball.
eyeball NEVER run with pointed objects in your hands like pencils, scissors, or sticks
eyeball NEVER point things (especially sharp objects, toy guns and water guns, and fireworks) at someones eyes...and make sure no one points them at your eyes
eyeball Wear sunglasses when you are outside
eyeball If something gets in your eyes, wash your eyes out well with cool water and do not rub your eyes. Rubbing will cause whatever is in your eyes to scratch the front of the cornea. Then, when the material is gone, it will still feel like it's there!
eyeball If you wear contact lenses, make sure you take care of your contacts properly and wear them as your doctor told you to. Contacts can damage your eyes if they are not worn correctly
eyeball Always use plenty of light when doing anything involving concentration like reading, drawing, making models or watching TV. Not using enough light won't hurt your eyes, but it will make them get tired more quickly
eyeball ALWAYS see an eye doctor if you feel pain in or around your eyes, things are blurry, or every few years as your doctor wanted you to. A comprehensive eye exam by an optometrist is the best way to catch problems early!
