Who Was Jesus?

The Gospel of John is the fourth in the eyewitness accounts of Jesus' life (see Eyewitness Testimonies). It starts with, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning."( ). In the book of Revelation we learn that one of the names for Jesus is "The Word of God" (see " "), so John was saying, "In the beginning was Jesus, and Jesus was with God, and Jesus was God. He was with God in the beginning." So Jesus was with God from the beginning of time, and in fact He was God (see " "). But this was not only stated by John, Jesus himself said that He was with God from the beginning, and His pre-existence fulfilled several ancient prophecies:

Prophecy - "But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times." (Mica 5:2)

Fulfillment - "'I tell you the truth,' Jesus answered, 'before Abraham was born, I am!'" (John 8:58)

Prophecy - "The LORD brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was appointed from eternity, from the beginning, before the world began." (Proverbs 8:22-23)

Fulfillment - "And now, Father, glorify me in your presence with the glory I had with you before the world began." (John 17:5)

Prophecy - "In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. But you remain the same, and your years will never end." (Psalms 102:25-27)

Fulfillment - "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together." (Colossians 1:17)

Prophecy - "For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6)

Fulfillment - "'I am the Alpha and the Omega,' says the Lord God, 'who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.'" (Revelation 1:8)

Prophecy - "Come near me and listen to this: 'From the first announcement I have not spoken in secret; at the time it happens, I am there.' And now the Sovereign LORD has sent me, with his Spirit." (Isaiah 48:16)

Fulfillment - "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning." (John 1:1-2)

As the first verse from the book of John mentioned, Jesus is in fact the second part of the , and thus He is God. The fact that Jesus was God incarnate also fulfilled many prophecies. Click 'Next' to continue...
