The most compelling evidence for Jesus' claims of deity is His fulfillment of prophecies. The Old Testament of the Bible is filled with literally hundreds of prophecies regarding the Messiah, and as you will see, Jesus fulfilled them all. But what is the likelihood that Jesus could have fulfilled this many prophecies, each one realized in minute detail, and some of which were written nearly 2000 years before He was born?
In his book, "A Search for the Spiritual" James Emery White wrote:
"Scientist and Mathematician Dr. Peter Stoner, former chair of the department of mathematics and astronomy at Pasadena City College and later chair of the department of science at Westmont College, investigated this question with six hundred of his students. They sought to calculate the odds of just one biblical prophecy about the Messiah coming true in the life of Jesus the way that it did. Eventually they determined that the odds of such an event were one in four hundred million. Stoner and his students then calculated the odds of eight of the prophecies made about the Messiah being fulfilled in Jesus' life by chance. The answer was one in ten to the seventeenth power - which is a figure with seventeen zeros behind it! Finally, Stoner examined the odds of forty-eight prophecies about the Messiah being fulfilled in the life and person of Jesus. His conclusion: one chance in ten to the 157th power. Yet this is precisely what happened. But not just forty-eight prophecies came true. Three hundred and thirty-two distinct Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah were fulfilled in the life of Jesus. For this to have happened by chance would be akin to a person randomly finding a predetermined atom among all the atoms in a trillion, trillion, trillion, billion universes the size of our universe."
These facts are staggering! They not only confirm that Jesus was, without a doubt, the promised Messiah, but they also prove the credibility of the biblical record (see "Is the Bible Credible?"). The Bible's prophecies are fulfilled to 100% accuracy, which is the litmus test for verification of God's word. No other source ever has, or ever will, make future predictions with such accuracy as the Bible does. This is simply because God is all knowing, and the biblical text is God-breathed. Since God is infallible His inspired word is infallible, and if anyone claims to be predicting the future in God's name, they must be held to this same flawless standard (see " ").
I will cover almost all of the 332 prophecies regarding the Messiah here, but this is not meant to be a complete list of all the prophecies that were fulfilled by Jesus. I will, however, attempt to illustrate how these prophecies predicted the very person of Jesus, as well as the many events of His life, from His birth through His death and resurrection.
