[398] Letter to EDP - June 22, 1921 - Ashbel H. Barney, 61 Broadway, NYC: "My great-grandfather, John Barney, was the son of John (b. Sept. 15, 1753 in Rehoboth, Mass., and Ruth. This John was the same as yours, but our information does not give the date of his death, nor the last name of his wife. He descends directly from Jacob, the first Pilgrim. I have always been given to udnerstand the family was Welsh originally, and the name was spelled Birney, Berney or Barney indiscriminately."

"Ancestral Register of Austin Dunham Barney" -- There is some evidence that
John lived for a time at Pomfret, Conn. In about ;1764 he settled in Guilford, Vermont, being one of the pioneers in that town. He was supervisor 1772-3; collector and highway commissioner, 1774; fence viewer 1777. He also served as overseer of the poor and was a member of a committee to sell lands belonging to the town. He was a member of the committee sent to the Windsor Convention in 1777.

He was a carpenter.

was in the Revolution; he lost both limbs in war, suffered great pain.
