Chengyang is famous for its Wind Rain Bridge and in the county there are more than 50. The region is inhabited by Dong minority tribes, which provided us traditional show including audience participation It was interesting that although the bamboo leg crunching dance looked similar it was different in terms of how the people went through, and also the beat.
A day around the surrounding area showed beautiful mountain scenery , other dong villages including Friendly Kids eager to learn english or any other stupid phrase that ladies from sheffield would teach them.
We then moved on to Longji Rice terraces (dragon backbone rice terraces) which resulted in a four hour climb through mud, being laughed at by the locals because my legs were covered in mud, and spectacular views. After a night in a small hotel, with ice cold water, and rock hard beds, we decended, and took a bus to Guilin and another bus to Yangshuo,
Yangshuo, and Guilin are famous for its Karst Scenery, but unlike Halong Bay, these Karst formations are on land. After a boat ride up the Li river we watched Commoront Fishing. This is where the Large Bird has a stick through its neck, so it can't swallow the fish, and the fisherman can then empty the bird and keep the fish.
Yangshuo is a small place, and very foreigner friendly, with many Cafe's and hotels. And many backpackers find it a peaceful way to unwind after being on the road nearly a month.
It was with a bit of dissapointment, that I left Yangshuo. My tour finished in Hongkong, and the next tour started from HongKong and went via Yangshuo, but some visa problems may of resulted in problems for me later, so I took the long bus/train to Guangzho and boat ride to hongkong.
Hongkong is famous for its sky scrapers but I escaped into Kowloon Park, found an indonesian restaurant and frequented Mcdonalds..., the temple st night market, and took the bus to Guangzho and train ride via Guilin to Yangshuo again. We were stopped by flooding in Guilin (it was rainy season after all) and it delayed us a few more hours. If You can avoid catching a train in Guangzho, I would recommend it. The train station was a sea of people pushing and shoving and jumping over chairs.
Moon Hill was a pleasant place, and you could climb to the top for spectactular views of the many mountains. After descending the mountain and one last view We took the back way past waterbuffalo and many rice paddies and finally ended up resting in West Street Cafes
