Playing a Malkavian Character
IndentDepending on your personality, acting ability and creativity, playing a Malkavian character can be a living hell, or a day dream. To avoid making a character you are going to hate, ask yourself why you wish to be Malkavian. If your answer sounds a bit like 'Well the game needs one', 'So and so says their cool' or 'Well, my uncle bought me the Clan book for Xmas, so I have to', then you probably shouldn't play a Malkavian.
I consider people who play Malkavians well to be gifted. It's not a simple task to pose as a mad vampire, that only has a certain type(s) of derangement. Some people may find that pretending to be mad comes easily to them, or that it is simply a matter of taking on the role. If you aren't one of these people, there is hope for you yet, all you need do is remember the following points.
- If you get the option to select your derangement(s), choose ones that you can most easily maintain, or that you yourself may have on a minor scale.
- Remember, your madness is a good thing, not a bad thing. Play it out as best you can. That way people will either respect you as a good role player. Or fear you as a lunatic, either way you know you have done a good job.
- Just because you have a derangement doesn't mean its always active. People who have mental derangements in real life aren't being constantly affect by the derangement. For instance, some one in denial doesn't deny everything.
- Use your derangement to have fun. Blame anything you do wrong on it, so that you don't get in trouble. Better yet, use it to blame you crimes on others. Or to be the truest Malkavian you can be, act out your derangement at the most inappropriate times. (ie. The whole party is in absolute silence waiting for a victim and you feel compelled to scream at the top of your lungs "I broke the silence!")
IndentFinally, remember that by nature Malkavians are pranksters. So to keep in the spirit of things, try to pull off at least one halfway descent prank a night, just to keep the other players on their toes ::grin::
