The floor was so rotten that putting in patch
panels was out of the question. After hunting around for a while I bought the
wreck of a Kiwi assembled
1963 Dodge that had slammed into a motorway barrier
at 80 miles an hour and had been completely stripped. I paid $100.00 for it
which included delivery from the other side of town.
I chopped the floor out of my car from under the brake pedal
to the front of the rear seat and the same with the wreck and after a lot of
scraping and cleaning to remove the underseal and sound deadener it was fitted
into my car and Mig welded in and then quickly run over with a grinder to remove
the dags. I used all the factory seams and after seam sealer and painting it
is very hard to see that anything has been done to it at all.
The subframe was in excellent order under all that grotty
looking stuff, it was all cleaned up and properly protected
and painted. The trunk floor was getting thin and had lots of pinhole sized
holes in it so a panel was made up to go into the trunk floor and welded in.
Front and rear screens were removed and a couple of rust holes repaired. This
all sounds easy but it was a slow process and it was about 6 months until it
was back in my garage and the real work could start.
