Rodrigues, 18 km long and 8 km wide, is situated at about 560 km off the North-East coast of Mauritius. Its population is estimated at about 35,000 people. Here, there is no close proximity among the locals for they prefer to live in enough space so as to be able to cast their eyes upon the wrinkled landscape that merges with the ocean at the horizon.

Meeting with the local population is something that cannot be forgotten. Visitors have always been impressed by their unique lifestyle which is a charming combination of simplicity, friendliness and hospitality. The only port, Port-Mathurin, which is also the capital of the island is situated in the North. The ship "Mauritius Pride" runs regular trips from Mauritius. Two Air Mauritius flights with 48 seater planes are also scheduled daily from the motherland. Rodrigues is a magical place for the nature lover seeking peace and tranquility. Trekking, mountain bike and hiking are out of the world experiences. Rod-fishing and accompanying fishermen on their way to pick up lobsters, crabs and octopus from "casiers" are as popular as angling.

The undersea world is abundant with fish and marine flora. Diving centres offer high-quality material support in addition to professional coaching which deliver licences equivalent to CMAS and Padi. Just as you will find the best team for an unforgettable big game fishing experience.

Also, discover the Caverne Patate found at Butte l'Herbe with a guide. A wide variety of handicraft goods are available to tourists. Hats, mats and baskets are woven from local raw materials like aloe, raffia, bamboo and vetiver.

The cultural expression of Rodrigues is deep rooted into two worlds of equal value. Famous "Mazurka" and "Polka" have been adapted to "diatonic accordions", "triangles" and others to produce lively choregraphies. Percussion instruments as "ti plache" and "catchia catchia" bring the vibrant african sounds through the "sega tambour", while the "sega accordions" blends the sounds of the two drums and accordions in a successful marriage of two cultures that have inspired the local music and dance.

Rodrigues is also synonymous of "seafood". Fresh seafood are plenty. The famous "ourite" (octopus) is picked at low tide in the lagoon and prepared in different ways for the pleasure of your taste buds.
