  What it is

SHUTDOWN is a program that shuts down computers with Advanced Power Management (like many laptops) from the DOS command prompt.

  How it works

The SHUTDOWN.ZIP distribution package contains 2 files:

        SHUTDOWN.EXE     the actual program
        SHUTDOWN.TXT     this document

The SHUTDOWN.EXE calls the BIOS function. If your computer has not got Advanced Power Management it will not be shut down. If you are running some flavour of Win9x on your computer, and Windows can actually shut down your computer, then this program can do also.

Before the program actually shuts down your computer, you've got some 5 seconds to make up your mind. If you decide you don't want to shut down after all, you can hit 'C' to cancel the process.

  Installation

Decide where you want to keep the program. You might like to put it in your DOS directory, or a directory with extra command line driven programs. It's nice if that directory is in the PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT, so you can execute the program from any directory. Then you won't have to move to the directory where you've installed the program.
  CD \
  MD XTRADOS
  EDIT AUTOEXEC.BAT
  (look for "PATH=", then append ";C:\XTRADOS", then save & exit)

Copy the SHUTDOWN.ZIP to the directory.
  XCOPY SHUTDOWN.ZIP C:\XTRADOS\

Goto directory and unzip the archive.
  CD C:\XTRADOS
  PKUNZIP SHUTDOWN.ZIP

You now can execute the program.
  SHUTDOWN

PS: The SHUTDOWN program worked fine on the Compaq Contura 430C laptop i
    wrote it on. Recently obtained a PHILIPS FT-8600, and for some reason
    the program DOESN'T work on it. So it's not such a good program, but
    give it a try on your hardware...
