Characters of Evangelion

Perhaps what draws most people to Evangelion are the characters. Director Hideaki Anno successfully creates a rememerable ensemble of characters, while Yoshiyuki Sadamoto visually delivers them to the audience

Neon Genesis Evangelion revolves around the story's main character, Shinji Ikari. Somewhat shy, extremey passive, and always apologizing, Shinji is quite the opposite of what you would expect of a main character. Son to the NERV surpreme commander, (Gendo Ikari,) Shinji-kun (called by familiar friends,) is the designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-01.

Rei Ayanami, designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-00, is one of anime's most celebrated characters. On almost any anime website, you'll see her unique blue hair and red eyes. Rei almost never talks to anyone, and has trouble displaying her emotion. Towards the end of the series, you'll understand why she is like this.
Asuka Langley Soryu, designated pilot of Evangelion Unit-02, is 1/4 Japanese and 3/4 German. She was confirmed as a pilot when she was very young has been training ever since. Asuka has an extreme amount of pride and hates to lose at anything. She hasthe highest syncronization ratio with her Eva, than Shinji or Rei. She constantly annoys Shinji calling him baka-shinji (stupid Shinji) as if it were his given name.
