Ikari, Shinji- Third child to be founded by the Marduk report; desiganted pilot of Evangelion EVA-01; 14 years old; son of Ikari, Gendo, supreme commander, NERV.

After being requested by his father to come to NERV headquarters, Shinji pilots EVA-01 and defeats the first angel, with no prior training. Now living in Tokyo-3, Gendo and Shinji decide that it is better to live apart, than with each other. Shinji now resides with Misato and Asuka in the suburbs outside of Tokyo-3

Shinji has an extreme lack of confidence in himself and is constantly apologizing for his actions. He is lonley at times, but has now made friends with Toji Suzahara and Kensuke Aida. He relishes constantly over the words his father said to him after an angel battle, "Good work, Shinji," although he knows that they don't mean anything. That is his reason for living- to be praised by others.

"Ikari" in Japanese also means "Hatred"
