This is the index for some of the lines which are particularily questionable, some more so than others. This can be seen as a companion to my Most Wanted index. Generally these are for questions concerning entire lines and/or those of more distant ancestry, though I have also included some of the more interesting questions concerning only a single connection or two (the less interesting of these would belong more properly on my Most Wanted page). A few of these remain topics of much discussion on various genealogy sites, and some may never be answered satisfactorially to all.
The following questionable lines are not included in any of the main page's (the ASCII tree, the surname index, nor the Ahnentafel) other than in some cases a brief mention:
- Is my Great Grandmother, Mamie Myrtle Hardin, of the Lavinia, Carroll Co., TN Hardin Family from the 1900 & 1910 census? And if so what are the details of the family (ie which census version is correct?) and what in turn is their ancestry? This one currently doubles as both a Most Wanted and a Questionable.
- Was the mother of Absolum Mullinax (My 5th Great Grandfather and thus my 6th Great Grandmother) full or half Native-American? And if so, of what tribe?
- Is Ammannuel "Manuel/Emanuel" Mullinax (My 6th Great Grandfather) the elder sibling to both Matthew Mullinax Sr. from Dublin and to the John Mullinax who married Sarah Donnally, both of which lines have been well traced?
- Was my 7th Great Grandmother, Margaret Gritman not the child of William Gritman & Margaret Pieters but rather the daughter of John Gritman & Elizabeth Fowler and thus both her husband's wife and grand-niece (from an 11 year younger sister no less) as some sources claim? This seems highly unlikely, but given the shaky information about the parentage of Margaret Pieters (i.e. her father supposedly dying 2 years before her birth) and the overall lack of information thereof, I can't rule it out. There's also the possibility that there were two seperate Margaret Gritman - Edward Spragg marriages, one being my 7th Great Grandparents, the other my 10th.
- Was the mother of Anthony Jansen Van Salee, aka The Turk (My 10th Great Grandfather and thus my 11th Great Grandmother) the daughter of the Saadid Sultan of Morocco? or is there another explanation?
- Is the welsh ap Rhys ancestry of Robert Royce (My 10th & 11th Great Grandfather, 4x over) correct?
- What is the Ancestry of Admiral Jan Jansen van Haarlem, aka Morat Rais, aka Caid Morato, aka etc. (My 11th Great Grandfather)? Is it (some way or another) connected to Gijsbert/Gysbert van Haarlem and Kornelia Boucquet (and their known ancestry)? Or to the Mol(l) family? or something else?
- The St. John ancestry I give as questionable because of the question over whether Ann "Mary" or Mary Ann(e) Russell (My 9th Great Grandmother) was indeed the daughter of Francis William Russell, Lord Russell, who was son of Margaret St. John (My 11th Great Grandmother), or was she the daughter of Thomas Russell?
- Further, which is the correct Russell Ancestry of the Earls of Bedford? And Finally, does Mary Russell, My 5th Great Grandmother, have any tie to this family?
- Plus various others where one or mabye two of the earliest generation(s) are unsure, but which do not warrant a big enough of a question mark to bother listing them here.
And then there are also some other's which I have included on the main parts of this website, for various reasons, mostly either because I had already included them before the information was questioned (or at least before I made this seperate index for such lines), or because I belive it likely to be true, namely:
- The John B. Shepler connection: Did John B. Shepler (My 4th Great Grandfather) die in PA or in OH? and if it was Ohio, is John B. Shepler (my 3rd Great Grandfather) really John B. Shepler Jr and thus son of John B. Shepler (my 4th GGrandfather)?
- Questions concerning the ancestry of my 7th Great Grandmother Eunice Root, [2nd] wife of Ephraim Royce. It seems there is lots of confusion regarding a number of different Joseph Root's who married Hannah's. The version that makes the most sense (and which is backed up by J.P. Root's book, which lists the following Eunice as having married ? Rice) is that Eunice is the daughter of John Root & Margaret Strong, this John Root being the son of Stephen Root & Sarah Wadsworth - Stephen Root being an older brother of my 7th Great Grandfather Caleb Root. However, other versions have that Eunice Root is from Massachusetts and is the daughter of Joseph Root & Mary Russell (yet another Joseph Root - Mary Russell marriage!) and that this Joseph Root is the Son of either Joseph Root (another brother of Caleb & Stephen) & his first wife- Hannah Haynes OR that he is the son of THAT Joseph Root (thus making him Joseph Root III) & Hannah Benton. However, most sources that list such a Eunice Root (be it listing her as either a daughter of Joseph Jr. or III & Mary Russell) have that she married a Capt. Caleb Montague, not Ephraim Royce. It appears (and is backed-up by the J.P. Root book) that Joseph Root, brother of Caleb & Stephen is often confused with his/their 1st cousin Joseph Roote (who married Hannah Haines) from the Northampton, Massachusetts line of Root's, both Joseph's having a long series of descendents all named Joseph (at least IV & V, respectively according to the J.P. Root Book) and in both lines the 2nd to bear the name Joseph each married Hannah's - Hannah Wadsworth (thus likely confused with Sarah Wadsworth, from above) in the case of Caleb & Stephen's nephew, and Hannah ? (presumably this is the Hannah Benton some sources mention) for the other, according to the J.P. Root book. The J.P. Root book further has that Joseph Root III from the Massachusetts line married Mary Russell and had a daughter Eunice, who indeed married one Capt. Caleb Montague, thus explaining and straightening out more of the confusion. (side note: the above mentioned Margaret Strong is also the niece of my 9th GGF Lt. Hawkins Hart)
- The identification of Thomas Southard (my 9th Great Grandfather) to be of the Southworth family continues to be disputed by some researchers.
- Is Ann "Mary" or Mary Ann(e) Russell (My 9th Great Grandmother) really the daughter of Francis William Russell, Lord Russell & Ann Forester or is she the daughter of Thomas and Ann Russell (and if so how do those Russell's fit into the rest of the Russell Family).
- What is the Allison ancestry prior to their time in NY? Does it include the Lawrence Ellison ancestry of Yorkshire or Lancastershire, Northern England (My 10th Great Grandfather and above) and thus also the Rishton/Rushton ancestry?
- The identity of the father of Anthony Jansen Van Salee, aka The Turk, aka Theunis Janszen Van Salee (My 10th Great Grandfather) as being Admiral Jan Jansen van Haarlem, aka aka Morat Rais, aka Caid Morato, aka etc., is not accepted by all Van Salee reasearchers
