What's this all about, then?
Welcome to issue number 4 of "Off Beat Lyrics", bringing you the lyrics you won't find
elsewhere on the Net ... we think. Lyrics to songs that are
almost or completely forgotten. Songs that - for whatever reason - aren't played on the
radio anymore, have faded from view, or weren't in view in the first place, but still have interesting lyrics and/or background
stories to them. Bizarre, humorous, novelty songs... Obscure or forgotten, funny or plain weird,
you will be able to discover them here!
And since we're not expecting you to actually know these songs, you will find not only the words but also the music
itself (or sizeable excerpts) in
RealAudio format, plus a picture of the record sleeve or artist if possible.
Note: If you still haven't got RealAudio player (RealPlayer) you should get it - for free - from the
RealNetworks site. Go get it now! (but please come back later...)
Well maybe we would if we were living in sunny California, if you'd believe Hank Ballard; but
as we're having to put up with the chilly Northern European April weather here, that would only
guarantee us the Mother of all pneumonias...
So we'll keep 'm on, thank you, and let Hank Ballard do his thing:
The song was released on single, Stang Records ST-5053. It hasn't got a picture sleeve so
we offer you the closest we've ever come (less than 24 hrs) to photographing a streaker...
The 1996 Wimbledon tennis final between Krajicek and Washington, you may recall,
was 'enhanced' by a female streaker.
Unfortunately we weren't there at the time, but we were the next day, so with a little bit of imagination...
(Yes, they had to play on Monday because the mixed doubles tournament wasn't finished yet due to
rain delays. And that day admittance was free!)
Let's Go Streaking - Hank Ballard
The year was 1974, and of
course Ray Stevens had a worldwide number one hit with "The Streak" (Don't look, Ethel!),
in which he parodied the then rather popular craze. Hank Ballard's song came out about the same
time (we don't know who was first), but didn't scale any chart heights. He's also far more
straight-faced than Ray Stevens, urging us all to join the fun.
Wimbledon Center Court, still recovering one day after being hit by a streaker...
