ILLEGAL WORKERS: ACTION MUST BE TAKEN

(Sibu 5th October): The police has done a good job in arresting ninety-two (92) illegal workers from three sawmills in Bawang Assan area.

In commenting the successful arrest of the ninety-two (92) illegal workers when the police launched the General Operation Force (GOF) last night, DAP Sarawak State Chairman, Mr. Wong Sing Nang said the increase in the numbers of illegal immigrants or workers in the state is a concern for every Sarawakian.

According to Superintendent Vincent Laing, the GOF chief, ninety (90) of them are Indonesians and two are from Myanmar. Eighty-six (86) of them did not have any documents while the rest had their visas expired.

Mr. Wong said those who want to employ foreign workers must abide the law and apply work permits and visas for them.

?Do not think that the police will not catch them. Harbouring any illegal immigrants/workers is a serious offence and is liable to a fine of not less than RM10,000.00 but not more than RM50,000.00 for each such employee under Section55B for Immigrant Act 1959/63,§ Mr. Wong added.

Mr. Wong said that the police must conduct raids as often as possible. This will possibly reduce the numbers of illegal workers.

The police must also conduct investigation whether there are syndicates behind such for illegal activities.

Mr. Wong calls on the people not to employ foreign workers unless and until they have obtained valid work permits, visas and entry permits granted by the Immigration Department. If anyone has any doubt on the documentation, one can check with the authorities concerned.

?Very often, we heard and reported news about illegal immigrants committing offences in our countries. If we want to stamp out of these, everyone must not employ illegal immigrants§ he added.
