Susan Howatch...Sister of the Spirit

When I realized I wanted to write
biographical sketches of women,
I knew Susan Howatch would be included,
for she is one of my favorite writers.
Her Church of England books have helped me in my
own spiritual quests,
and I think they would help anyone.

Born in 1940 in Surrey, England, Susan Howatch
has described her childhood as a happy
She was an only child and wrote even as a child.
Her father was killed in World War II.

She got a law degree from the University of London,
And fairly soon moved to New York, where she did
secretarial work. She married Joseph Howatch,
a sculptor, and they had a daughter.
Her first novel was published in The United States.
She lived in America for eleven years.
After that she went to Ireland for four years,
then back to England in 1980, to Salisbury.

In 1984 she began working on her
Church of England Series.
In the mid-eighties, Howatch had a
spiritual Anglican conversion that caused her
to realize the emptiness of her life, despite
her material success. It is reported that after
her conversion she created a minimalist existence
for herself, and gave away much of her money,
and took a vow of celibacy.
She presently lives in London.

Her latest book is WONDER WORKER, 1997,
is about Nicholas Darrow, a character last seen in
Howatchs MYSTICAL PATHS (1992).
Darrow is now a priest in his forties, heads a
healing ministry in London.
Its an exotic kind of love story.
Has the Devil slithered in St. Benets Church?
This is a story about temptation and deception.
Howatch grapples with issues that face women alone,
men devoted to the spiritual life, the ministry.

Howatch deals with family in her books,
with limitations of gender, our sexual orientations,
class problems, destructive patterns,
mental illness and depression.
Finally, the paranormal and chaos.

Her characters struggle to be good,
want to be decent people, but find having
continued faith difficult. There are crises.
But her human beings endure-
Reminds me of William Faulkners belief that
human beings do endure.
