Barbara Kingsolver...Sister of Conscience

Barbara Kingsolver was born on
The Day of Conscience, April 8, 1955.
She grew up in eastern Kentucky, but
at age 7, lived with her family in
newly independent Congo.

She went to DePauw University in Indiana,
majored in Biology. She was graduated
in 1977. In the early eighties,
She studied biology and Ecology at
University of Arizona in Tucson.
She received a Masters of Science.

Kingsolver spent two years in Greece and France,
supporting herself in a variety of jobs. After grad school,
she took a position at the University of Arizona as
a Science Writer. For several years she wrote many
science articles. In 1995 she received an
Honorary Doctorate of Letters from DePauw University.

She married a chemist in 1985, became pregnant,
had a daughter, named her Camille.
The next year, began writing fiction again,
started THE BEAN TREES � it was published
by Harper Collins in 1988.

Barbara Kingsolver lives in Tucson, is married to
gutarist, Steven Hopp. They have a daughter, Lily,
who was born in 1996.
