Melody Maker, July 2000 (Chris' Top 5 Bob Dylan Songs)

TOP 5 BOB DYLAN SONGS - CHRIS MARTIN, COLDPLAY

1. "Buckets of Rain" (from the 1975 album "Blood On The Tracks" on Columbia)
Emotion-fuelled, brilliant melodies, just joyous lyrics. I used to think Dylan was a joke because you only hear people doing impressions of him. Then I watched 'Don't Look Back', a flim about him, and it was just like meeting Bob Dylan on video. He managed to be really cool but also sing these really heartfelt songs and often with a sense of humour too. He looked good, too.

2. "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" (from the 1975 album "Blood On The Tracks" on Columbia)
It's happy but it's really sad at the same time - that juxtaposition that we really love. Because life's like that, isn't it?

3. "I Shall Be Released" (from the 1971 album "Bob Dylan's Greatest Hits, Vol. 2" on Columbia)
You think you know Dylan and then another song grabs you and makes you melt. We were coming back from Reading and I fell asleep listening to 'Blood On The Tracks'. I woke up for 'Buckets of Rain' and I don't think I've ever been happier - 'I Shall Be Released' is a similar vibe. It's just about breaking free from prison, it's brilliant.

4. "Bob Dylan's 115th Dream" (from the 1965 album "Bringing It All Back Home" on Columbia)
The funniest song I've ever heard. It's about Bob Dylan discovering America before Columbus and it's f***ing crazy. He gets in trouble with the police and he keeps losing items of clothing and then he hands out with all these famous people and then he sails back to England. It's mad.

5. "Knocking On Heaven's Door" (from the 1975 album "Pat Garret and Billy The Kid" on Columbia)
When the voices come in...emotion and melody, combining those two. And a bit of roughness to this. And his voice. It's everything, everything. It melts your heart. But also it can make you feel really cool.
