5 December 2001 - New York, USA (Irving Plaza)
COLDPLAY / JJ72

IRVING PLAZA

5 December 2001

Once again Irving Plaza was sold out for this show.  JJ72 came on stage at 9:00 pm and was equally intense from the night before and put on another great performance.  Unfortunately there was no smashing of any equipment.

Coldplay entered the stage in the same fashion with the blueish purple lights and the eerie music. This time they started with the song Spies that the crowd loved and sang along to as well.

The band seemed to be equally excited and happy as the night before. They also wore red again to signify AIDS Awareness.

Here is the setlist as I remember in no particular order (there may be some songs that I have missed):

SPIES
RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD
SHIVER
YELLOW
ANIMAL
MURDER
WE NEVER CHANGE
DON'T PANIC
IN MY PLACE
TROUBLE
EVERYTHING'S NOT LOST
A CHRISTMAS SONG (FORGET WHICH ONE)

This night was a little different then the night before. Chris kept saying that they played bad the first night and was here to make up for it.  They seemed to be more serious about their songs then the night before.  Although they still possessed the same energy.

During Everything's Not Lost Chris got up on the platform once again and conducted the audience into singing along which was not a hard task considering everyone sang every song anyway.  Before the second encore they once again made it look like the show was over and put the lights on.  Then Chris came out and did a Christmas song that everyone sang along to. He thanked everyone for coming out to see them.

FINAL THOUGHTS: From having the perspective of seeing both shows my favorite night was the first night. Even though the band themselves felt that they played awful I sure didn't see anything wrong.  Earlier that day the band was invited to play Trouble on KROQ (which is one of the most popular radio stations in New York City). I listened to the performance and it was flawless. Chris used his acoustic guitar to play this song instead of the keyboard and it was a great version.
