Margate have signed 23 year old midfielder Paul O'Brien from Ashford Town. Paul was originally at Dover with Chris Kinnear, coming through the youth ranks before making it into the first team and being recommended for England under 18's.

Martin Buglione has left the club as had been rumoured for several months. I heard a while back that he was going to exercise his rights under the Bosman ruling and that is exactly what he has done. The move is, however, a strange one. He has gone the Hayes of the, temporarily unsponsored, Conference League. In the past he has failed to cut it at any level above ours and you have to wonder if he will be back at Hartsdown again some day.
The rumour mill has been turning again with one of its best stories. Apparently Margate have turned down a bid from Norwich City for Lee Spiller. The reason? Coventry and Sheffield Wednesday have also expressed an interest. The bid? 250,000 ! I am led to believe that a bid has been made for Lee but a quarter of a million is a way over the top exaggeration. More details as and when we get it.

Two exclusives in two days, unless of course you call the clubcall. Margate have signed Sittingbournes extremely talented 21 year old forward Tom Plank for an (surprisingly) undisclosed fee.

This web-site has got it's first exclusive - the identity of Margate Football Clubs new sponsor. It is................EASTONWAYS COACHES. They have provided the away travel for the last couple of years and even had 'Margate Tour Bus' emblazoned on one of their vehicles last season. No details on the length of the deal has been quoted yet.
Lee Turner has become the fourth player to renew his contract although it is unclear whether he has signed a three year deal like Martin, Sykes and Edwards.

The first squad news of the summer was given out by Teletext this evening. Paul Sykes, Eliot Martin and Bill Edwards have all signed long term contracts with the club. This puts to an end the rumours that Paul was off to Fisher Athletic andthat Eliot was set to join Gravesend. No details of the contract lengths have been given.
Still no confirmation as to whether John Magee has definately left the club or whether Martin Buglione has got the move to the Rymans League that he was after.

As the close season is normally quiet for news I will update you on some of the stuff I have heard about Margate so far.
Phil Handford has left the club to take over as reserve team manager at Gravesend and Northfleet.
Andy Blondrage has moved to America so being the only other confirmed departure so far.
It has been rumoured that Paul Sykes has been offered more money by Fisher Athletic and is set to move to the Surrey Docks stadium. At the same time Paul Manning has apparently had talks with Chris Kinnear about a return to Hartsdown. A fair swap?????
John Magee is set to move up North, obviously ending his time with the club if it happens.
Link Music are no longer the sponsors of the club and Laurie Pryor is no longer a Director.
The site for the new ground is between Haine Hospital and Jacky Bakers in Ramsgate. It is to have an initial 4,000 capacity with view to becoming 6,000 all-seater.
No sponsor has yet been confirmed for next season but the two names that I have heard are Swindon Computers and Thorley Taverns.
MORE UPDATES AS AND WHEN WE GET THEM.
LEE TURNER For the second time this season, Lee has scooped a new pair of gloves for conceding the least number of goals during January (he also won it in September)
DR. MARTENS REPRESENTATIVE MATCH The DML v Hellenic League match featuring Bill Edwards and managed by Chris Kinnear will take place at Burnham on Wednesday the 17th Feb
Wednesday 11th February 1998
LINK MUSIC It is reported that Link Music have ended their connection with Margate F.C. Please note that there is no official confirmation of this but we believe that they have accepted an offer of 75,000 to go. It was rumoured earlier in the season that a computer company was waiting to take over the sponsorship at the end of the season but once again no official word was given. Link Music now are apparently looking at investing in Kingstonian F.C.

Dr Martens Cup Semi-Final Bashley beat Dorchester 2-0 in their quarter-final replay so now we get the joyous prospect of two more games against them this season!
Monday 9th February 1998
ELIOT MARTINEliot has been awarded the player of the First Round of the F.A Umbro Trophy, thanks to his winning goal at holders Woking, which gave us one of the most unlikely victories in the competition. If there is a performance of the round, did we scoop that too?
BILL EDWARDS Surprisingly, Bill is the only Margate player so far to make it into Chris Kinnear's Dr. Martens League representative side to face the Hellenic League. Personally I would have included at least Eliot Martin and Lee Spiller as well !!
DR. MARTENS CUP SEMI-FINALAfter reaching the semi's of this competition for the first time in many years we will face either DORCHESTER TOWN or BASHLEY in the two-legged semi-final. Please let it be Dorchester!!!!!
JOHN MAGEE Early indications are that Magee could be out for anything up to 8 weeks after damging his ankle during a collision with Paul Pilkington in training.
