Welcome to the House of Worf and Troi

I confess that when Star Trek: The Next Generation first aired all those years ago it didn't even occur to me to view Worf and Troi as a romantic couple. Like many others, I was first a Riker/Troi fan. However, that phase didn't last very long since the writers who had created this wonderful relationship with countless possibilities never made the effort to actually do something with it. Instead, they swept it under the carpet and we were given the endless parade of 'babes and hunks of the week'. Fortunately, they did a much better job with Miles O'Brien and Keiko Ishikawa, but what I really wanted to see was an on going, steady romance between my two favourite characters, Counselor Deanna Troi and Lieutenant Worf.

The road from friendship to a budding romance between the two was anything but smooth. They didn't begin as friends but as they changed over the years, so did the nature of their relationship. Through the seven seasons of ST:TNG we were shown how they became true friends, how they learnt to respect and trust one another, and finally, how they began to view each other as something more than mere friends. The writers teased us with a number of episodes which hinted at a possible romance but, alas, the events seemed to always take place merely in someone's imagination or in an alternate universe. And it wasn't until in 'All Good Things...' that this much rooted for romantic relationship was finally allowed to reach the realm of reality. But, as the old saying goes, better late and all that. <g> Besides, what did you think fanfic was invented for, anyway. <eg>

Worf and Troi, who?

Lieutenant Worf, son of Mogh. He was orphaned in the Khitomer massacre in 2346 and was later adopted by a human couple, Helena and Sergy Rozhenko. Worf has a younger Klingon brother, Kurn and a human stepbrother, Nikolai Rozhenko. Worf also has a son, Alexander, with K'Ehleyr, a Federation ambassador who died in 2367.

Worf graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2361. When ST:TNG began he was a Lieutenant (j.g.) but by Star Trek Generations (the first TNG motion picture) he'd achieved the rank of a Lieutenant Commander.

Klingons are a humanoid warrior race originally from the planet Qo'noS, the Homeworld of the Klingon Empire.

Counselor Deanna Troi, daughter of Lwaxana and Ian Andrew Troi. Her mother, the daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed, is Betazoid and her father, a Starfleet officer who died when Deanna was seven, was human. Deanna had an older sister, Kestra who died as a child. Deanna also had a son, Ian Andrew, by an unknown noncorporeal life-form in 2365 but the child died only a few days later.

Deanna studied psychology at the University of Betazed before joining the Starfleet. When ST:TNG began she was a Lieutenant but was later promoted to Commander (Thine Own Self, season seven).

Betazoids are a race of humanoid telepaths from the Federation planet Betazed. Betazoids can't, however, read Ferengi, Breen or Doptherian minds. As Deanna is only half Betazoid she's not telepathic per se, but a very gifted empathic.

Worf and Troi, together

Their romance has never been an easy one. They've met with obstacles most couples never have to deal with but they've overcome each one of them - together. They're certainly different both in race and in mentality, one is a Klingon warrior and the other a half Betazoid/half human empath, but they're good for each other. They complete each other. Both of them are strong and independent in their own right but together they are stronger. And together with Alexander they form a family.
