A QUITE STAR-RICH MAP, there is nothing of interest to the casual observer. The challenging Eridanus (globular) Cluster is near the middle of the map.

FEATURED OBJECTS: NGC 1518, NGC 1519, NGC 1521, ESO551-SC001, NGC 1591.

NGC 1518
ESO550-G007
RA 04:06:48
Dec -21°10.7'
Galaxy

h: "B, L, pmE, gbM; has a star 8th mag S.p. 3' or 4' distant."

Steve Coe, observing with a 13” f/5.6, notes: “Bright, pretty large, much elongated 2 X 1 in PA 20, gradually much brighter middle at 150X. There is a hint of a dark lane with averted vision. There is a 10th mag star to the SW.”

Steve Gottlieb, 17.5-inch: “fairly faint, very elongated 3:1 SW-NE, 2.7'x0.9', weak concentration. Located 2.5' NE of a mag 9.5 star. Appears asymmetric with the SW end close to the bright star much fainter than than main body.”; 8-inch: “F, vE 3:1 streak SW-NE. A mag 10 star 2.5' SW interferes with viewing. N1521 lies 22' ENE.”

NGC 1519
ESO550-G009
RA 04:08:06
Dec -17°11.6'
Galaxy

Steve Gottlieb, 17.5-inch: “fairly faint, fairly small, very elongated 3:1 ~E-W, broad concentration. Located 4.6' WNW of mag 8.8 SAO 149397.”

NGC 1521
ESO550-G011
RA 04:08:17
Dec -21°03.1'
Galaxy

h: "pB, R, bM; barely in time, and too late for a good observation."

Steve Coe, observing with a 13” f/5.6, notes: “Pretty bright, pretty small, round and bright middle at 150X.”

Steve Gottlieb, 8-inch: “F, vS, R, weakly concentrated. Located 5' NNW of mag 8.5 SAO 169161. Forms a pair with N1518 22' WSW.”

ESO551-SC001
Eridanus Cluster, CCLSW-2, CO422-213
RA 04:24:44
Dec -21°11.4'
Globular cluster

Data: Integrated V magnitude 14.70 Central surface brightness, V magnitudes per square arcsecond 22.81 Integrated spectral type Central concentration, c = log(r_total/r_core); a 'c' denotes a core-collapsed cluster 1.10 Core radius in arcmin .25. [“Catalog Of Parameters For Milky Way Globular Clusters”, compiled by William E. Harris, McMaster University. (Revised: May 15, 1997; from http://www.physics.mcmaster.ca/Globular.html; Harris, W.E. 1996, AJ, 112, 1487) ]

Steve Coe, observing with a 13” f/5.6, notes: “There is no definate sighting of this low surface brightness globular at Buckeye on a 6/10 night at 100X.”

NGC 1591
ESO484-G025
RA 04:29:29
Dec -26°42.8'
Galaxy

h: "not vF, pL, R, gbM."; "vvF, R, gbM, 15 arcseconds."; "pF, S, R, glbM, 15 arcseconds."

Steve Gottlieb, 17.5-inch: “fairly faint, fairly small, elongated 3:2 SSW-NNE, very weak concentration. A mag 13 star lies 1.2' due W. Brightest and largest of three with E484-G26 4.4' SE and E484-28 10' SE.”
