Galaxy

Discovered in 1785 by William Herschel (H II-556) "pB, cL, iR, vgmbM."

h: "pF, R, gpmbM, 40 arcseconds." On a second occassion he called it "pB, vS, gmbM, lE, 25 arcseconds long, 20 arcseconds broad."

Steve Coe, observing with a 17.5” f/4.5 at 100X, notes: “pretty Bright, somewhat elongated, brighter in the middle”

Tom Lorenzin: “12.4M; 3.2' x 2.4' extent; faint little oblong with brighter center; bright star 50' due E is 5M SAO 177642.”

This galaxy is listed in the "Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies" as having an outer ring of 2.80 arcminute diameter.

A supernova erupted in this galaxy in 1975 (15.0v)
