ALMOST 300 FAINT GALAXIES crowd onto this chart, which shows the tail-end of Hydra. Older star charts have an added feature at the serpent's end - an owl perched on the sinuous extreme.

Discovered in 1786 by William Herschel (H I-138) "cB, R, psmbM."

h: "B, pS, R, psbM, 12 arcseconds, a star 9th mag follows 10.5 seconds." On a second occassion he called it "vB, R, bM, has a star 10th mag 11 seconds following, 30 arcseconds south."

Hartung notes: "In a field sprinkled with stars is a bright symmetrical nebula about 1.5' across with a nuclear centre. 10.5cm shows this object plainly and also the nucleus; the small star 2.5' following is a close pair."

Steve Coe, observing with a 17.5" f/4.5 at 100X, notes: "Pretty bright, pretty small, round, very suddenly much brighter in the middle with an almost stellar nucleus at 150X."

Tom Lorenzin: "11.7M; 1.3' x 1' extent; bright, small oblong with much brighter center; 7M star 2.5' to E."

8-inch Meade, 18mm eyepiece: Small galaxy, relatively bright, symmetrical to round with a bright nucleus more or less in the middle. A beautiful small star prominent to the north east. A few stars trail away in a beautiful peppered starfield. [MS]

Discovered in 1785 by William Herschel (H II-312) "F, L, iR, vgbM."

Tom Lorenzin: "11.6M; 6' x 5.5' extent; fairly large, faint, not quite round fuzz ball with brighter center"

Sandage and Tammann (1975, Astrophysical Journal, 196, 313-328) includes this galaxy in the NGC 5128 Group. Members include NGC 4945, NGC 5068, NGC 5102, NGC 5128 & NGC 5236.

Other names: "UA345,E576-29". Inclination: (face-on, in degrees) 22 Total photoelectric blue mag 10.7 Total colour index .67 Logarithm of the angular diameter D25 (arcminutes) 1.86 Blue photographic magnitude 10.39 This galaxy is included in a sample of galaxies with velocity less than 500km/s with respect to the centroid of the Local Group. [Nearby Galaxies. Schmidt K.-H., Priebe A., Boller T. (Astron. Nachr. 314, 371 (1993))]

Included in the CCD-atlas of Ryder S.D. & Dopita M.A. (1993) "An H-alpha Atlas of Nearby Southern Spiral Galaxies" Astrophys.J.Suppl. 88, 415. They note: "Here is yet another example of how lopsided the H II region distribution in late-type spirals can be, even those exhibiting well-organized spiral structure. A number of giant H II region complexes to the west are visible even in blue light photographs, but only two such objects are found in the eastern arms."

8-inch Meade, 18mm eyepiece: This is a really faint, large roundish structure with a very dim small nucleus. Busy extended nebulous surroundings. A few faint stars to the edge of the field. (suburban skies) [MS]

Discovered in 1786 by William Herschel (H II-567) "pB, pL, iF, gbM."

h: "vB, pmE, gmbM." On a second occassion he called it "B, R, pL, psmbM to a star."

Houston includes this galaxy in his Hydra Hysteria. He calls it "big, but faintish ... I estimate it to shine with the total light of a 10.9 mag star, but the surface brightness is low."

Steve Coe (1992, The Deep-Sky Observer, Webb Society, Issue 1) observing with a 17.5-inch f/4.5 at 100x notes: "pB, pS, somewhat elongated, stellar core, bar structure with averted vision."

This galaxy is listed in the "Third Reference Catalogue of Bright Galaxies" as having an outer ring of 5.15 arcminute diameter.
