HOW TO BE SCOTTISH
A Guide for North Americans

It has been said that there are only two kinds of people:
Those who are Scots, and those who wish they were. It is not entirely clear who made this statement, but it is believed that it may have been a Scotsman. It is the sort of statement which should gladden not only the hearts od Scotsman, but also the hearts of many other people in the world of today. In Canada, Anglophone and Francophone seem to grow further apart, rather than closer together. In Ireland, Irishmen of two different religions but much common heritage murder one another in a vain attempt to force opposing political  wills on the other chap. In the Holy Land, Jews and Arabs kill and are killed in a land each claims as his own. In the remains of of the former federation of Yugoslavia, Serbs, Croats, and Muslims slaughter each other. It is a sorry state of affairs.
Happily, the the desire one kind of people to become like that other kind of people indicates that togetherness is not an entirly lost causeand that there is still a modicum of tolerance and intelligence to be found in the human race.
Here's tae us, what's like us? is the toast od Scots to themselves. Well, a good many poeople wabt to be like them, the other kind of people, so to speak. The efforts of some to do so are nost noticeable.
While it must be admitted that the two kinds of people referred to are normally found only in English-speaking countries such as Canada, the United States of America, and parhaps England and certain distant parts of the Commonwealth of Nations (formerly known as the British Commonwealth)
