A brief account of major battles in Scotland.

0084 Mons Graupius - 10,000 Picts and 340 Romans killed when Calgacus fought Agricola.
0600 Catterick - 300 Edinburgh horseman killed by the English.
0685 Nechtansmere, Forfarshire - On the 20 May the Saxon King Brude defeated the Pictish King Nechtan. Nechtan had rejected the Celtic Church.
0937 Brananburgh - The Saxon King Athelstane defeated Danes and Britons near Solway.
0973 Luncarty - King Kenneth the 3rd defeated the Danes.
1014 Mortlach, Banffshire - King Malcolm the 2nd defeated the Danes.
1018 Carham - King Malcolm the 2nd and Owen of Strathclyde defeated the Northumbrian army on the Tweed.
1057 Lumphanan - On 15 August MacBeth was defeated and killed by Malcolm Canmore.
1093 Alnwick - King Malcolm the 3rd was killed during battle on the 13 November.
1138 Northallerton - The 'Battle of the Standard', King David defeated and 10,000 Scots killed by the Normans.
1263 Largs - King Haaken of Norway and his fleet beaten by the Scots.
1296 Dunbar - Edward the 1st of England defeats the Scots with 30,000 men and 5,000 cavalry.
1297 Stirling - William Wallace (later Sir William) defeated the English.
1298 Falkirk - William Wallace and his army of 29,000 defeated by Edward 1st of England and his army of 88,000.
1308 Inverurie - King Robert the Bruce defeated Comyn of Buchan and the English.
1314 Bannockburn - The Scots with only 500 mounted men, 2500 spearmen and 5000 warriors defeat the English and their army of 22,000.
1332 Dupplin - Scots defeated by Edward Balliol.
1333 Halidon - Edward the 3rd of England defeated the Scots.
1338 Otterburn - Henry Percy and the English defeated by the Scots under Douglas.
1346 Nevilles Cross - King David the 2nd defeated and captured by the English.
1388 Otterburn - English defeated, Harry and Ralph Percy captured.
1402 Homildon Hill, Northumberland, England - Scots defeated.
1411 Harlaw - Donald Lord of the Isles was defeated by an army of Lowlanders.
1513 Flodden - King James the 4th defeated by the English.
1547 Pinkie - 15,000 English under the Duke of Somerset defeated by the Scots.
1568 Langside - Moray and 45,000 men defeated Mary with only 4,500.
1645 Inverlochie - Montrose against Argyll. 1500 Campbells killed.
1650 Invercharron - Montrose defeated by Strachan.
1666 Rullion Green - The Covenanters defeated by General Dalyell.
1679 Drumclog - Graham of Cloverhouse defeated by the Covenanters.
1689 Killiecrankie - General Mackay defeated by Viscount Dundee. Viscount Dundee is mortally wounded.
1745 Prestonpans - Prince Charles (Bonnie Prince Charlie) and his army of 2,400 defeat Cope and his army of 3,000.
1746 Falkirk - Jacobites defeat the English governments troops.
1746 Culloden - The Jacobites with 4,900 men are massacred by Cumberland with 10,000 men.
1882 Isle of Skye - The 'Battle of the Braes'. On 17 April the last battle on 'British' soil took place. Crofters protesting over the destruction of their communities and the introduction of sheep (Highland Clearances) fought with the Glasgow Police. The battle forced Gladstone to set up a Royal Commission to look into the crofters grievances. It survives today as the Crofting Commission.
