Depression

Depression in children is often the result of some external stressor. Biological depression does not usually mainifest itself until adolescence or early adulthood. In some cases, however, a chemical imbalance does exist in younger children. When depressive symptoms are severe enough to warrant it, medications can be used to help regain a normal mood balance and prevent a depressed child from harming himself/herself. Anti-depressants are not necessarily needed in every case of childhood depression.

Childhood depression can also be very effectively treated with counseling. A trained psychotherapist will be able to assess your child and determine both, what has led to this depression and how to help your child alleviate his/her depressive symptoms.
